This has come up before, but I have never seen a full answer to this from anyone who has actually relocated the automatic (Allison 740)shift lever from right side to left. I am reaching the point where flooring will be installed in the next week or so, and would like to pin this down. Description? Pics? Vendors? Michael Lewis Seattle |

I moved the shifter in my 89 Prevost. A new longer cable was really expensive, so I simply extended the old cable by adding in an extension cable. I built a jig to mount the old cable and new cable together, mounted it to the frame and added a 6' cable from there to the new shifter area. Took a little adjustment and XXX words, but it works very well, can't tell it was extended. |

Indeed, the shifter is very convenient on the left side. I moved the park brake to the center of the dash and told my wife that was her panic button if I should suddenly slump oover the steering wheel. It is just three air lines that you can easily replace with new ones by going back to the other end of each line. The air line drawing in the book shows where each one is connected. |

Luckily for me, when I had the tranny swapped out of my 96A3 the tranny that went in was an electronic shift HT748, so instead of a shift cable to contend with, I have a bundle of wires. The people who did the swap located the shifter down by my left knee... so when I decided I didn't like it there and wanted to relocate it, attaching it to the left side of the dashboard, it was a fairly simple matter to re-route the wires! Because I removed all of the shielding and grab rails around the driver the only thing left was a small metal framework, and the only thing it held was the E-brake control. The more I looked at it, the more I speculated, and looking up from the spare tire bay, I could see it would be a simple matter to re-route the the e-brake control to the lower facia of the dash using longer air lines. As it turns out, it was harder to get the old framework for the E-brake control unolted from the floor than it was to re-route the control and mount it to the dash! As for the relocation of a shifter with a CABLE, without having to replace the whole cable, it sounds like Ray D has a doable solution. Brian |
