Leave it to the British. It might work for them, but I'll bet you it never gets made. Hey, when that thing turns what keeps the cab from getting crushed? Brian |

The cab appears to connect to the carriage when the two are together and so it's only the bogey that turns in that situation. If you look at the other article which links at the bottom of the page, there is another pic showing the cab sits up on a support, able to move independant of the chassis. It could well be built, they have taxpayer's money to finance it, so why not....... LOL. Peter. |

Peter hit the nail on the head. Only in England would they have the surplus tax dollars (pounds?) to seriously consider such. However, we do have about the same thing here in the USA. Ever sees a trailer train with truck trailers riding the rails--on their own wheels? I think it would be maximum cool to replace the wheels with train rail tyres and roll down the rails in my Crown motorhome. |

Anyone remember a movie called the Flim Flam Man? In the movie they let some air out of the tires on an old pick-up and rode the rails to make a getaway... almost cost them later when they had to drive off the rails at the last second to avoid an oncoming train! Without some serious co-ordination between rail and these semi/rail trucks I can see serious problems. But then, stacks of Government money can smooth over even the thorniest problems, so if it is built it will be as Peter says, with taxpayer money. Brian |

The Santa Fe railroad crews use the dual drive vehicles here all the time and I expect most other railroad companies across the country do the same. Special offset rims put the tires directly on the rails and they have drop-down railroad wheels to guide the vehicle along the tracks. Peter. |

There are lots of pickups and service trucks in BC with rail wheels. Tom Caffrey PD4106-2576 Suncatcher |
