Hey Fellas,

The owner of a Habersham County, Georgia tour bus company was killed Monday.

I just found out about this a few minutes ago. This company runs 3 or 4 Prevost coaches.

Below is the link to the story that is published in one of our local papers.

``The only thing it can be attributed to barring anything in
the autopsy is driver inattention, which unfortunately is
the leading cause of highway death in South Carolina,''
Gaulden said.

Bernice Hall, a passenger from Athens, Ga., on the bus, said
she thought the driver was going to change lanes to avoid
traffic ahead. ``I saw the truck. I saw the car. I saw both
had stopped and he wasn't braking,'' she said. ``By the time
I said, 'Oh my God,' we had already hit the car.''

"Driver inattention" is likely the leading cause of highway
accidents in any/every state. It's not the "cellphone", it's
the cellphone user; it's not talking to your passengers, it's
turning around and visiting with them...mentally, or physically.

And there's no "law" that's going to prevent that.

(sorry, just my $00.02)

I remember 600 mile day-trips where other drivers went sightseeing
with their group and left at 7pm for that trip back. You can force a
driver not to drive too many consecutive hours, but you can't force
a driver to sleep between. Tiredness is as bad as drunkenness, the
response time is greatly hampered.

Here is a video of the accident from our local NBC station. You will have to wait for the Lexington Medical center commercial to play before the accident video is loaded.

The driver of the car, who was from this local area, didn't have a chance at all. I'm wondering how fast the bus was running when he hit the car and then compacted it under the trailer.

I drive that section of I-20 quite a bit and even in rainy conditions most of the traffic runs well in access of 75.-80 mph the speed limit I believe is 65 at that point but goes up to 70 a couple of miles down the road.

Great reporting by the local TV station. Here in the Seattle area the reporter would have gone off on tangents from the dangers of BIG vehicles, OLD drivers and/or the need for public transit. Nice to see a reporter reporting and not editorializing.
