The 6V71 in my 5307 has sat unstarted for about 10 months. I finally bought a pair of group 31 batteries (at 1125 CCA / 1200 CA each) today. I was impressed, engine started instantaneously on the first compression stroke, no smoke (hopefully that bodes well that my engine is in decent shape?). The 2 group 31's were plenty to fire it up. Of course we'll see when the weather gets real cold this winter, but I do not plan on using the bus much if at all in winter anyway. Since there seems to be a lot of talk about replacing the 8D's with something smaller and less expensive, thought I'd throw in my experience. "Worked for me" Mike. |

I have a MCI MC8 which is 24 volts. I replaced my 8D's with 4 group 31's Got me a 8 year warrenty and more cranking amps for less money. Works for me. |

Recently I replaced two 12V 8Ds with two, no maint. Interstate 950CCA group 31s. Cost was $90 each as opposed to around $160 ea for 8Ds. At 60 deg F, I see no noticable difference in cranking speed on my 8V71. They sure are easier to handle. Since I preheat with a block heater regardless the temperature and don't operate in temps below freezing, I don't anticipate colder weather to be an issue. Now I must fabricate a set of hold downs to secure them. They look sort of lost on that 2 - 8D size battery tray. |

Roger in WA, Do you pre-heat the batts and the fuel too? Remember that batt performance degrades in (real)cold temps also and warmed fuel flows better. FWIW Onward and Upward Marc Bourget |

Just make your hold downs out of wood, oak will be great. Prevost uses an oak board across the to of the battery with a hold down bolt at each end. I have started my preheated 8V71TA in 28 degree weather with two group 31s. I made a new compartment for them and used the 8D space for house 8Ds. |

Rodger in WA, one other item. One use listed in the Douglas Fir use book is sulfuric acid tanks. I saw that item some time ago, but we still have the book. That says to me that you should be able to make very servicable wood holddowns out of fir, if it is available. For what it's worth. Tom Caffrey PD4106-2576 Suncatcher |

A pair of Interstate 31's will fire the 950,000-mile 6V71N in our Fishbowl at work with no heater in sub-zero temps after a 3-day cold-soak. You'll be fine. |
