My apologies to the GMC busnuts group, who might read this again, but I need to "shotgun" this request for advice.

My spicer (first/reverse) crapped out on me while backing up into a campsite (on soft grass) at a fly-in last weekend in Brodhead, WI. Something didn't sound and feel right towards the end of the backing up process. There was another 06 owner in attendance who works on these tranny's and he got pretty filthy popping the lid on the spicer, as far as you can lift it while it is installed in the bus. I am very appreciative of his efforts. As much as we could see by lifting the cover about 1 1/2" and peering in there with a flashlight, we could see any reason why it wouldn't engage in 1st/reverse. Second-third-fourth are okay, and we limped home 555 miles only stopping 4 times and thus having to start out in 2nd gear. We disconnected all linkages and could not manually shift it into 1st gear. I will try that again before (ugh) removing the tranny for a better look, now that I am back in my own garage. (Maybe it's time for a 730........$$$$$.....?????) I live in Springfield, MO and might need to hunt up another tranny.

So, again, any good ideas?

Larry 1st thing I would do is pull the 2 drain plugs on bottom of trannie as they have a magnet on them this will also expose any metal chips and grindings in oil at bottom of trannie good luck

Larry, second IS reverse. The difference is the engagement of an idler. It sounds like first should be the only gear you're having trouble with unless you can't get it far enoungh into first to begin the shift to reverse.

It's possible for this kind of a problem to occur at any of a number of places. I would start by trying to prove that the shift lever would put it in first by disconnecting the 1/2 fork lever at the transmission.

If the shift lever will travel far enough, then try making sure the transmission is in neutral and then move the disconnected fork on the transmission into first.

This should help you prove if the problem is inside or outside of the gearbox. If it's inside, and the cover is off, then you want to try to move the 1/2 slider to first.

Good luck on the repairs. Please post what went wrong when you find out.
