Starting Problems

My generator won't start. What should I check?
Here are some of the most common causes we see for
starting problems. The ones that apply for you will depend
on the exact symptoms you're seeing:

FAILS TO CRANK
1) Low battery.
2) Bad battery connection.
3) Blown fuse.

CRANKS BUT WON'T START
1) Fuel below genset pickup level in tank.
2) Fuel supply shutoff valve closed.
3) Carbon deposits on spark plug.
4) Low oil level.

RUNS THEN STOPS
1) Low on fuel.
2) Low oil level.
3) Excess oil.

STOPS WHEN START BUTTON IS RELEASED
1) Low fluid levels--check and bring all fluids up to the
appropriate level.
2) Possible overheating--check for blocked air flow or other
possible causes of overheating.
3) Other functional problem--see an Onan-certified dealer for
an accurate diagnosis.
4) No AC output--when the set is not producing power it will
not continue running when the button is released.
Unfortunately, there is a whole list of potential causes for
this (from something as simple as a bad connection or dirty
brushes on up to a bad control), so it's often difficult to
diagnose without seeing a dealer for an accurate diagnosis.

Ditto Two Dog's reply. Disregard the "take it to a dealer" part
and check what the manufacturer lists as "possible trouble".

I had an estimate from a dealer for over $300, to repair the
starter on our Onan 6.5.

I bought the starter drive kit and did the job in 3/4 hour. Parts
were about $30. I took the bride out for a special super-deluxe
meal at MacDonald's with the savings. Was she ever grateful!!!
(you gonna' finish those fries, honey?)

Found this Onan choke solution on The Classic GMC Motorhome B/B -- >

http://www.surpluscenter.com/item.asp?UID=2004073118181640&item=11-2112&catname=electric

for $3.99 you can fashion your own electric choke solenoid replacement

Hi Frank, if you have the same board as the NH power drawer,
there are 2 relays on the board,
the lower relay energises when the engine starts and it's alternator charges,
once it closes, it energises the upper relay,

Your probles could be

onan 12 volt alternator not charging
points dirty on lower
points dirty on upper relay
broked solder joint on board
(you should be able to remove the relay covers to clean points)

relay with covers removed, start the engine with outside start switch on the gen panel, once the engine starts, push on the lower relay contacts, if the engine continues to run, you may have a bad resistor on the board... you can watch the relays close and open.
the top relay is double pole double throw
the lower relay is single pole double throw

the lower relay is the start relay and the upper relay is the run relay, (not a complete description but the just of it)

Dwight
