I have never forgotten the sirens blowing and people cheering on VJ day and then later meeting My Dad coming home on the train! "God bless America and the military Men and Women that keep Us free" John L

I remember, as a seven year old at the time, exactly where I was and what we were doing.

Strange, poignant, disturbing memories.

Thank God our country came thru that! The Gold Star family members among us deserve special thoughts for that time in their/our lives.

Some one has said "God Bless America, land that I love..."....."Remember Pearl Harbor".......

It was before I was born (not long) but my dad had just finished his first semester, senior year in college. He got home on Saturday and on Sunday afternoon, he and his father went to the "oyster rock" in the creek at the family farm near Swansborough NC to dig some oysters. As they were on the water, he and my grandfather looked at each other and said "what are they doing ringing the church bells at 4PM on Sunday?"
Since he'd already finished all his ROTC qualifications (except graduating in May, '42), he was about to find out.

This year will be the final get together for the servivers of Pearl becuase so few of them are still alive. I was born in 1950 but still had tears in my eyes when I heard that on the radio.

Dirk, when I was in your great country I found it very interesting that there were a lot of memorials everywhere we went and in each there was mention or statues that displayed your country men and ours from the US together in every war we have been in. Our country should do more of that also and remember all the men and women who fought together and for the same cause.

Chromie,

Unfortunately there are those in the country now that want to see the end of these sorts of memorials, for various reasons... some are Aussie born but few thank god, but most of course are newcomers. The vast majority will never forget the sacrifice by both our countries and our other allies.

For years veterans have visited a local high school around Remembrance Day and have talked with the students about war. They have often brought some artifacts and even some old military vehicles. This year the school cancelled the visits altogether and claimed it was cancelled for safety reasons. I think it didn't fit in with their political correctness agenda. Sadly, in my opinion its this unwillingness to talk about the horrors of war, this unrealistic peace at any cost attitude that leaves many young adults completely clueless about the sacrifices made to ensure their freedom and unaware of the need to be ever vigilant in protecting what we have.
