Greetings, I drove my 1962 GM 4106 (side mounted 8V71) home from Springfield, MO on the 24th, and now it's in the back yard and won't start. Have narrowed down to removing the starter/solenoid. I know to disconnect the cables, but can only see two mounting bolts. Since I'm not a mechanic, I need a detailed procedure of getting it out from behind the engine. Lord bless. kenny |

Kenny I used an old 15/16 wrench and cut it in half and if you twist yourself in a knot or find some real skinny fellow that might help another suggestion we found was helpful was a piece of swing-set chain that we hooked to the starter ground bolt It took two of us to lift it out PS have done this 3-4 times now hope not to do it again soon, just rembe that the engine is counter-clockwise rotation(sidewinder)and the starter has to be for the same Good luck |

Dear Carl, I was thinking about some sort of sling or cradle for it. Kid's stuff sure comes in handy sometimes, huh [:-) Lord bless ya, kenny |

Gain access to the floor panel in the floor at the rear of the bus, remove the panel. Remove the front exhaust manifold, the starter will come off after removing THREE nuts from studs that go thru the starter flange. ( be sure you have disconnected the ground or the hot side of your battery pack.) this starter is HEAVY!!! >>>Dan |

Dear Dan, It looks heavy. Am told it weighs in at 60 - 70 lbs!! Question: will the mainfold require gasket replacement? I'm no mechanic but can follow directions [:-) Lord bless ya, kenny |

I just crawl under the bus , there is a sqare hole in the engine bulk head for the purpose of removing the starter, once underv there you can sit up and work through the hole, mine has a oil breather on the side of the engine , i remove it , disconect the batteries before you do anything , you can remove the starter cable from the starter and the three nuts that hold it on the engine with a ratchet a extension, you can then pull the starter through the hole in the bulkhead and let it drop to the ground , it can then be draged out of there. no need to remove any manifolds or anything else, putting it back on is the same thing in reverse , they have studs onstead of bolts so you can dlide the starter over them then get one nut on and you are good to go , i have had mine off my 4106 several times, need to clean all the electrical connections once a year and make sure everything is tight. starter is heavy but i am 62 years old and i can get it out of there ok .Hope this helps you out Frank allen |

To Frank and others: If you are having trouble with your electrical connections, just do what I do. Buy a tube, or bottle of "NoALOX", and grease up the contact/terminal/wire before you mate it up. Tighten as normal (lock washers are a good thing), and you will NEVER have to touch it again! When I put a new headlight, or other bulb in a car or bus, I put NoALOX on the bulb pins or base first. I have never had a connection failure since I started doing this. But wait! It also works on ground terminals! Such as exist between engines and bodies or bulkheads. NoALOX and others like it are available from your local Home Depot or Lowe's store in the electrical section. The stuff is designed for when you need to make a reliable connection to aluminum wiring, but clearly it is good for more than that. -Chuck |

Dear Chuck, NoALOX sounds like a miracle product made just for old buses. I'll look for it at our local Home Depot. Lord bless ya, kenny |
