Not selling these, but Ebay has this gen set, a Detorit Diesel 2-71 item number 3831561496 Says it is 2000 lbs, so my question is, would that be to heavy for a middle bay mount? Also would this be a pretty noisy unit at 1200 rpm??? Would this seem like a good deal if it would fit and wasn't to heavy or noisy?? Thanks for you help folks

While I'm no expert on the middle bay location that you are talking about, I would be concerned about the size alone of the unit in question, by looking at the photo of them lined up against what looks like at least a six foot if not higher fence and then comparing them with the guy near one in the back.

I have a Perkins four cylinder diesel powered 12,500 watt genset on my '82 Wanderlodge and it is on a air operated slide compartment drawer and it is 30" tall by 46" wide, I can't measure the depth right now, but it is approximately 40" deep also.

If it isn't too heavy for your compartment, it may take relocating the radiator in order to get it to fit. My Perkins has a 110 volt motor running the radiator fan, so that the radiator can be set off to the side of the engine. I plan on changing the fan to a 12 Volt Hayden electric fan to get it a little quieter.

Even if your bay could support the weight,why haul an extra 1400 pounds around? I have a 14.5 kw set that only weighs 600 or 700 pounds.

I could be wrong, but it seems to me there is no way that those generators weigh a ton apiece.

My guess is the person selling them believes they weigh a lot, but having no clue as to the exact weight, figures 2000lbs should cover it.

One way to lighten the unit, and lower it, would be a to build it a lighter frame, or nearly no frame at all.

when those units were built the tendency was to overbuild the framework, including the radiator housing, and for that matter the radiator itself.

Replacing the radiator and it's associated hardware for a modern one with aluminum fins would net you a smaller radiator (that would cool as well if not better)and in conjunction with the lightened frame could remove hundreds of lbs from the unit.

I strongly suspect that the quoted weight is correct. The clue to the weight is the RPM. It is running at 1200 RPM, therefore the alternator is a six pole instead of a four pole and is much bigger and heavier than a four pole. Also the engine must be larger in order to produce the required HP at 1200 RPM. These units are designed for prime power operating 24/7, 365 days per year.

Also, please note that they are rated as three phase output. If the alternator is actually a 12 lead unit to permit reconnection for single phase, 120 volt output, then the alternator would typically be de-rated by 66%, leaving a total output capacity of 4 KW/5KVA. Much too small for most RV applications.

If anyone needs three phase power, then I think they would be a great bargain, otherwise better pass.

for prices that seem reasonable... Does anyone have any experience
with these Asian made products?

At 3600rpm, they will be rather noisey and you have to find a power source to spin the head. The open frame contrator type also needs some way to quieten them down, or buy a VERY long cord..... (grin).

By the time one has messed around with this sort of equipment, one could have bought a good used Onan RV unit. Gas powered Onans can be had quite cheap if you search out one from a wrecked RV, etc. New ones aren't too bad a price either.

I picked up a used 12.5kw Quiet Diesel for $2700, so they are out there.

I looked at them in person, I wouldn't touch one for that money.

If they failed you would have no chance of a warranty, and I would say failure is definitely possible on those.

We had these gens on the Navy YP I was on. They are LOUD !! I believe the 2000lb weight as advertised. We put a hurting on our 1 ton chainfall when we lifted ours up to replace a mounting bracket.

Also fuel economy will probably be less than a modern 4 cycle diesel engine.

Regarding the cheaper gas gensets, Harbor Freight also has gensets with Robin Engines at a very good price. Subaru Robin might outlast Honda. We have four Robin engine units in the Dominican Republic and they perform very well. Ours have european generators, Harbor Freights have Chinese generators.

There is a guy on ebay selling 4 pole 1800 RPM generator heads for those of you who want to build your own. I would like to build one with a Yanmar engine that puts out 22 HP at 3600 RPM if I can turn the governor down to 1800. I wonder what the HP will be at 1800 RPM.

I have a yanmar model 3tn82te-g1 (3cyl) w/ a martin m1200-ds generator - excellent genset -

RATED OUTPUTS :

17.7-26.5 KW / 24-36 HP / 2-3000 RPM

13.2-16.2 KW / 18-22 HP / 15-1800 RPM

FYI. In order to have 60 hertz (cycles) output, the generator/alternator must be turning at either 1800 rpm or 3600 rpm.
