I have a 1961 4106. I have made this post before with out any luck on fixing it yet.
Now I see that my fan for the bus heat and air does not work along with the drivers fan. My generator light stays on all the time now. I checked my batteries be for I started the bus. They checked 12.5 then I started it they showed 14.5. I turn on all the lights and checked it showed 15.5. Then I turn the fast ideal on it showed 17.5 then 16.0 then 17.5 then 16.0 keeps doing that. You can HEAR THE MOTOR GO UP AND DOWN with the change of the meter. Sounds just like the air compresser kicking in and out. What can I do about this please any help would be nice.
Getting ready to make a trip soon. Any one know any one in NORTH CAROLINA Charlotte area that knows about old GM buses

Check all the connections around your regulator, generator, batterys and engine it could be a bad ground in these areas. If it ain't connections you have a malfunctioning regulator. The voltage shouldn't go above 14.2 (I set mine at 13.8) and should be unaffected by engine speed and electrical load (except for some drop under heavy load at very low engine speed).

Just a quess, but check the relay wiring and connections, that is if you have the AC generator there should be a relay terminal on it. A lot of the circuits depend on relay signal to operate.

i would carefully check all the wiring on the generater which is really a alternater, it has a diode bridge in it that can cause problems, look at the wiring connections on the regulater also, and check the wiring on the relay located in the electrical panel at the right rear of the bus, i go over mine once a yr and clean all the grounds from the battery to the starter as well as the hot wires, you should be able to control the voltage with the adjustable regulator, you dont want anything over 14.5 volts at the batt, any more will destroy it as well as blow out some light bulbs etc. Charlie Neal at pinacle automotive may be able to help you he is just north of winston salem and is the best i ever seen on GM buses, also has or has access to most parts. I hope you get to the bottom of this as you cant operate it that way, do you have the shop manuel??? Deans coach has never been a aceptable help to me ever, thinks everything he has is gold. hope you get to the bottom of this problem soon, and let us know what happens,

Bob Baldwin, when the generator light comes on, the heating and air conditioning system is shut down to protect the battery and alternator.

This is because the electrical loads are too much for the set of starting batteries for more than a short time.

The fast idle switch was provided partly to make the generator turn fast enough to put out full power.

The second purpose of that switch is to raise the oil pressure to a safe level; at slow idle, the oil pressure is often down in the 5 psi range, and that will not cool the generator sufficiently while it is putting out full power.

Some of these coaches have a sensing relay that is mounted near the voltage regulator; this relay plays a role in turning on the generator. If it goes bad, the system will not charge (IIRC).

Luke at US Coach stocks parts and can help you with your needs.

For what it's worth.

Your Voltage regulator is toast.

Chose 1 a rebuilt from Luke , or a 3 stage regulator from Ample power or equal.

With a stock coach choice #1 ,
with loads of house batts , and no solar or other method for monthly equalizing #2 might work better.
