Can Camping World's little built in vacumn cleaner really work? I need a vacumn cleaner with a long hose that really does a good job, is it possible this one really is any good? Has anyone had any experience with this type of vacumn? Mamagator |

We have a built in vacuum. It works fine. The distances in a bus are not as great as a home system. I had a friend who put a built in system in his house then used a Craftsman shop vac for the power unit, with the standard built in relays and controls to run it. Seemed like a good idea since I had to clean my home built in with a shop vac if the lines got plugged. I don't think you really save space with a built in in a bus because the long hose takes up enough space for a small vacuum cleaner like an Orek. We have a cabinet just for vacuum hose and accessories. |

We had a built-in vac in both our commercially built RVs. I'd never have another one (stick & staple OR built-in vac). The hose, wand and accessories take up more room than a normal vacuum cleaner, isn't as powerful, is more difficult to clear clogs from, and is more difficult to keep clean (the extra long hose will eventually smell). One of the newer, inexpensive small-sized wet and dry vacs not only have more functionality, but they are easy to empty and can be used inside or outside the unit. Cleaning the car, or the bays? You won't do it with the built-in. And if you've ever ended up with a large puddle of something on the floor of the unit, you'll wish you had a wet and dry to take care of it quickly. I bought an El'Cheapo wet & dry vac at WalMart for under $30. When the engine heater hose broke (that fed the hot water heater located in the kitchen) , it flooded the area with hot antifreeze. That small wet/dry vac saved the day... and the flooring. When the new, professionally installed roof air conditioner's roof seal leaked during a heavy downpour... that vac was handy. |

I concur that, for use in a coach, a good compact canister vac is more desirable than a built in. Built ins save no space because space taken by a 30' hose equals the space needed for a small canister vac & hose. In my opinion, an even stronger argument for a portable is versatility of inside/outside use - bays, car, etc. On a couple of occasions, I could have used a wet vac too. One being cleaning up after a water & coolant leaked from hose on one of the Webasto heat exchangers. A wet vac would be useful for carpet shampooing too. I consider our central vac to be one of the least useful appliances in our coach. |

We have had one in our MC5 for about 5 years. My wife loves it. no noise or dust inside just empty the bag every 6 months. Neil |

One little word in Steve F's post says it all for RV vacuums-- Oreck. Stows in less than 4" space and sucks everything out of the carpet (and the plywood below). We added this to our bus this winter and love it- carpet and hard floors. It stows beneath the couch. And if you want, it comes with a hand held "dustbuster" style unit. Check 'em out. Jim |

I had a built in in DML and the hose took up so much space under the couch, and the quality of cleaning was just average at best, so we bought a portable one to stand up in the closed and never used the built in. Just left the hose at home. Hmmmm, don't remember if I gave it to Catskinner or not. Richard |
