I would like to add a multistage battery charger to charge my batteries from the diesel generator when the bus engine is not running. My question is, do I need to put in some type of switch or isolator to protect the aux charger when the bus is running and charging with the 270amp alternator? |

Not usually, most regulators only can controll volts, by monitoring volts , so if the coach big alt unit is keeping the volts above normal FLOAT (about 13.4 to 13.8) the multistager will "see" nothing to do. Even if it does attempt some charging it would be the same as 2 alt's charging same batt bank. The unit with the higher voltage will do most of the work, no harm. IF you wire a 3 stage regulator to charge house batts from the coach alt , there can be a hassle. Usually the house set is far below the start batt in terms of state of charge, but both will be raised to the charge voltages needed to get the house charged. This can cause slight overcharge of the coach batt , causing extra water requirements. Simplest is a set of Hydrocaps to reduce need for watering. Although I have seen a fellow that hooked the coach to the output side of a transistor isolator (bus alt to input & house) , figuring the 3/4 lower volt output could solve the charge problem FAST FRED |

Hydro caps (from Miami FL)are special replacement batt caps that return the water from charging to the cell it came from. Over charging will kill your batts IF you overheat them (EZ with coach idiot Volt regulator) , Or if you run them with plates exposed to air. WHEN is the overcharge? FAST FRED |

Its seems The coach batteries keep charging while I have my house battery switch on. The last time It blew the caps off the coach batteries. What do I need to do to prevent that???Bill 4104-4032 |
