Do you need to put a one way valve in the line, if you are fulling 10ft from the main tank? After the gen set is switched off, it always seems to take a while to fill the lines before she starts up again.

John, if your genset is at the same height as the tank and there are no leaks in the lines, filters, or engine piping, the fuel should not run back to the tank. I'm assuming you have the pickup & return separate from the main engine.

Sometimes you will see the fuel leaking back due to air coming back through the return line though there is supposed to be a check valve at the engine to prevent that. If there's dirt or ?? in that valve, and the return does not go to the bottom of the tank, the fuel will run back.

You can isolate the problem somewhat by connecting some rubber hose at the genset supply & return & running the genset out of a fuel can. Shut it off & see if the same thing happens. If so, there's a problem at the genset. If not, the problem is in the bus fuel plumbing.

Sounds to me like fuel is siphoning back into the main tank, so yes, a one way check valve would remedy that.

If adding a check valve doesn't remedy the problem, then i'd look at some of the things J-B mentions.
