Are there any laws about destination signs? Anything they can or can't say, or have to say? Anywhere??

Good question! Never thought of it myself. I only know in Wisconsin the only color you can have facing forward is white or yellow. One of the trucking companies painted their logo on the windfoil with red paint and then lit it so you could read it at night. Not in Wisconsin. They made them repaint it if I remember correctly.

Colors good to know... I'm guessing only an issue if a light is used?

I have one of the preserved original bus route signs and someone told me I can't have that in there.... clearly it's not a city bus.

Also we wanted to sell some ad space for some of our charity drives for some corporate sponsors.

Scott -

"Also we wanted to sell some ad space for some of our charity drives for some corporate sponsors."

Be careful here. . . IF your bus is registered with the DMV as an RV, you could be in a world of hurt advertising for corporate sponsors. You're now using the coach commercially, which opens a huge Pandora's box of DOT regs you've got to comply with. Just sayin'. . .

I don't know who told you you cannot use the original destination sign window with an OEM or replacement curtain. Probably the same person who thinks you're nuts to own a bus. . .

I know one fellow who has such things as "Wrong Bus", "Thisaway" and "Thataway", "Lost" and several other humorous sayings on his sign curtain. Says he gets a big kick out of seeing people's expressions when they read them.

I know another busnut who's got an ex-charter coach that used to work the NYC area. His coach looks completely stock with the original roll sign, so he has fun putting "JFK Airport" or "LaGuardia Airport" on display when headed thru that area in the HOV bus lanes.

The major supplier to the industry is TransSign, based out of Michigan. I don't have their contact info in front of me, but you can Google them. "Runcutter" may chime in here with this info, he's much more familiar with them than I am. I do know they will do a single sign for an individual, you don't have to be a bus property to order. Thus, I say go for it, and have fun in the process!!

FWIW & HTH. . .

:-)

Hmmmmm commercial use I need to look into the details of that. I can rent an rv from the local place and their ad is on the side of it, I can put a bumper sticker on it etc. It's probably against the regs because that's my luck. FYI when I say "sell" I'm being a little vague about how we really do it. We just raised almost 2k on our last trip for a woman with ovarian cancer. We had donated items we auctioned off from corporate sponsors they got some logo placement and mentions but we never took actual money for the transaction we just mentioned them, we tweet along the way, post on our website, YouTube videos etc. It's my personal rv used for the good of others. Anyone that won an auction item made a donation directly to the charity and just forwarded us a copy of the reciept. No money changes hands, we pay out of pocket for all gas and expenses. We don't have pay for ride passengers, we don't get paid to deliver goods. The good news is we are planning on our bus to be safe on the road and able to pass a dot inspection on mechanical stuff if that came an issue. Clearly I'm ignorant to all of that, but that's why we got new tires, air brake system, airbags, steering gearbox, etc. One step at a time I guess. It's a learning curve that's for sure. I've planned on getting my cdl and have been studying. I already have a commercial pilot license and an Internet ordained minster so I can marry people, why not have one more special ID in the wallet. I know one thing if I get a ticket it won't be for speeding. Sad thing is I've made this bus 10x safer than it was while in commercial use for 30 years. No seat belt including driver, single can rear air brakes, there is no way this bus was ever inspected or at least inspected right. Well no good deed goes unpunished so yeah I'm probably in for it in the end. If only we lived in a world where paperwork wasn't required and or open to interpretation from 10x ways by 10x government agencies all with their hands out or in the mix....

It was the same person that told me I need a CDL to drive the bus even though it's registered, titled and plated as an RV. He went on and on about it being over 26,000 lbs, having air brakes, and required a CDL. He said it had to say "private coach". I found our state regs showing that the rv was exempt from the CDL but he doesn't believe it, but I could not find anything about destination sign regs and if RV's were exempt if there were any. He did say why did you buy a bus and why in the world would you buy a bus with that paint job on purpose? (relative with good heart and free advice given freely)

Our bus stands out... Every time I drive it people take photos while passing, every parking lot I enter people take photos with it, of it, and come up and talk to us and ask to see inside. Men, women, young and old, in all shapes and sizes. We even have a matching sign on the rear... Pass us on the left, follow us on Twitter @bennythebus :-) because at 55mph the last trip I took the only thing i passed was 3 farm tractors in 400 miles never a car, truck, moped, etc.... Taking advantage of how much it stands out for the good of others is kind of our responsibility, at least that's how I see it.

Actually I give a $20 bill to the toll taker going over the George Washington Bridge.

The toll for an RV is $18.00 for a commercial bus $2.00.

Always fun to see that change I get back , tho I do help a bit by wearing a genuine Greyhound drivers cap.

Of course my coach is a bit different , dead stock outside , no rooftop carbunkles , no awnings , and front modesty screen and stock seats in the front. The requirement to get movie work.

Hey FF, if you "rent" your bus out for movie work that would require or be considered "commercial" under DOT crap then requiring paperwork, inspections and CDL? Or how does that work? Probalaby does but no one checks, some fine print in a contract that it's your responsibility, pain in the butt, or some other option?

Is there a "bus agent" or casting company?

Scott, whether you like it or not, best you start regarding the DOT regulations as the bully in the school yard.

If the bully takes no notice, fine.

But, if you get noticed, you'll wish you paid more attention to being invisible.

And don't expect others to share how they remain invisible...

You have many decades of commercial profit making shady dealings to catch up on, and as an internet clergyman, this would be a shark tank you may not want to enter.

Ever wonder what happened to Jimmy Hoffa Sr and why?

Stay legal, stay safe, stay invisible.

happy coaching!

Of course.

Most times the coach is shot STATIONARY , so I don't feel a need for DOT involvement.

The door opens , a babe gets on , the door closes, CUT.She gets off,I drive off, just me aboard.

The door opens , someone gets off , the door closes , I drive off, just me aboard.

Those that want to visit can find the 4106 at the Arcadia bash , and I am there usually from noon to 2,30pm (1430 for Canadians) to find a purchaser that wants to jump aboard and drive off with his new Sports Car Of Coaches!

Sadly there seems to be few Liookie Lous , either for a modest priced coach or for the monster shoe boxes that shine a lot, for a couple of 100 grand.

Transign's contact information is:

Transign LLC, P.O. Box 300005, Waterford, MI 48330. Dell Fields has been around for a very long time, I worked with him on rollsigns when I bought a fleet of transits in the early 80's.

I'd suggest you talk to Jennifer, at 248-623-6400. I worked with her when I bought the rollsign for our 4107. Interestingly, I taped my new destinations to the original rollsign from 1968 -- printed by Transign. If you have the original, you can tape the new one to it, ask Jennifer about the proper tape.

I have "Wrong Bus", which I normally display. I always wanted that one when I was driving in revenue service.

You can go with a lot of others, but personally I'd avoid anything offensive -- that could give others a bad taste. Sunova Beach might be fun, but questionable.

There's a thread running elsewhere about an offensive bus owner parked in a Walmart lot, probably causing that Walmart to ban others from overnight parking. There was a long-ago thread about a busnut that would pretend to swing into stops to pick up transit passengers, then drive off and laugh. I wonder how many fixed route drivers got disciplined for passups because of that clown. No need to possibly offend others.
