My 1975 4905 did not have an escape hatch. It only had 2 skylites in the roof. |

Marine hatches work great , if you cant locate a bus unit. Finest is Goyot (french) as it can hinge open in either of two directions with out going outside. All are fine aluminum construction and quite strong to stand on. Screens are avilable , and all come with arms to hold open & dogs to pull it down watertight. Works for me,many sizes avilable. There's the pricey marine stuff and the pricey RV stuff. And there's also the Home Depot skylight stuff. If it's big enough and closes watertight enough, it's good enough for an exit. You expecting a drug bust? Why is the roof so important? Hell man, in case of emergency, I'd prefer to be ground level... Where I can run like hell.... |

Hey, John that newguy Not sure how drugs got injected into this thread, but: Guess if you're doing drugs, you'd best avoid altitude! Falling off the roof from a regular height bus cuz I was stoned would be a real "Trip"???? LOL, Onward and Upward Marc Bourget |

Oh hey.... I bought a ladder at the flea market, that folds to 3' height, extends to 16' height and can be configured in multi-forms. WalMart sells the same (type) ladder for under $100. It's well worth it, to access the roof, side, etc.. And it fits nicely into any bay! |

Haha... yeah... It ain't the fall that bothers me.... It's that sudden stop at the bottom. |

In the case of a rollover, I want a roof hatch. I have a couple of marine hatches stashed away for just such a purpose. Gary |

Just a question: Let's say we have reskinned, installed quality windows without emergency features and roll over onto the right side, against a dirt embankment. Should we have both a floor hatch and a roof hatch? I understand the need for hatches in DOT busses with the liabilities of passengers for hire, but just how many are needed for conversions? There always is the "what if" scenario and many solutions, i.e. seat belt cutters, hammers to break glass, trunk releases, etc. that are used in cars, but how many devices like this are ever used? I like the skylight idea for free light and if it doubled as an escape hatch, fine, but is it really needed? |

Thanks for all the input To explain the hatch is simply for using the roof for a platform for viewing the races, accessable from the inside I guessed would keep the coach clean externally from ladders, etc. Thanks again Jimmy |

It wold be nice to open-up a hatch over the master bed area to see the stars.... & to access the roof without going down the steps, out the door, to ground level just to climb up to the rooftop. Rooftop "Grandstand" on bus for events "is A Good Thing". Also for those of us that live in areas that have low-hanging tree branches a access to the rooftop without haveing to exit the coach to the wet, mud, ditch, nabors big dogs, ect.... to either cut or lift tree branches away. Railings around the "Spectators area" is probly a good idia. First-Hand expereance here with rooftop tree triming: When in emidate need of roof level tree branch remooval & no professonal tree trimmers on-site the rooftop is an option worth considering. S. M. In Canada you are required to have the back windows (bedroom in most cases) pop out or have a vent size 18" x 24" for egress, roof hatch is not required...don't know about the US.. Ron |

24 inch escape hatch/vents used to be available from RV stores. Haven't looked in a long time, but put one in a class C I used to have. Richard |

Jimmy - as a veteran infielder for nascar and imsa races (remember when you were young and those wild all night infield parties - I once slept throught the entire Indy 500) - the best setup I have seen was exactly as stated above - hatch over bed because you only need 4 0r 5 feet of ladder which was stored on brackets on roof - you pop the hatch , stand on bed , retrieve ladder (half of a broken 5 foot lightweight aluminum extension ladder with the extended feet ( _/ ) works best) by reaching up on the roof and pulling into the hatch and fabricating custom hooks at top of ladder that catch the edge of the hatch frame - provides safe and convenient access - don't forget to put a small roll of foam backed indoor outdoor carpet in bay to roll out on roof to protect against scuffs and abrasions - by the way don't wear your high heels - tennies only - Niles |

John that newguy, To each his/her own. I wold rather look at the night sky than a mirror..... I am single & not all that attractive to myself. Also if I were to "get lucky" I wold be to much into doing than watching. LOL. However... if I were a "girly-man" that might be different.LOL. S.M.H. |
