Well, my spare transmission was installed at Meier Truck Service in Madison Wisconsin and we are moving again. The spare was shipped up from Florida to Milwaukee where I picked it up and brought it back to Madison. The R & R took about 8 hours. I had thought about shipping the damaged one back home so I could rebuild it, but the bevel gear and the carrier were pushed out of the case/housing and the case was too badly damaged. Not worth the cost of shipping back. Now we're headed to Mt. Pleasant Iowa for the Midwest Old Threshers Reunion. Thanks to all who helped with ideas, thoughts, suggestions and sympathy. |

Kirby, that must have been one heck of a BANG when it let go! Glad to hear that you've made it back on the road. Sounds like you made the right choice regarding the old tranny, at best you might have gotten a few spare bits and pieces Brian |

Kirby, we're glad to see you and Linda are back in operation. Did you happen to get any idea why the old transmission quit? I sounds like something went drastically wrong. Take care! Tom Caffrey PD4106-2576 Suncatcher |

Well, occasionally over the past year, I'd get a really hard shift down into second gear and sometimes the transmission would act like it couldn't make up its mind which gear it wanted to be in... quick shifts back and forth between gears. Not always, but occasionally. I queried various Allison techs, and it was suggested I should try changing the modulator, that it might help. Before I had a chance to get a new modulator, that last hard downshift did me in! Since the installation of my spare tranny that was shipped up from Florida, I've had a chance to buy and install the new modulator and it seems to me that the performance is normal now. Included with the purchased modulator was a Service Bulletin which says, in bold print: To insure proper operation of the transmission modulator, it is recommended that the modulator be replaced every 12 months or 50,000 miles, whichever occurs first and at each regular transmission oil change. CAUTION: Failure to install and maintain this unit as indicated may result in malfunction or transmission failure." Had I been aware of the importance of the modulator (ain't hindsight a great thing?) perhaps I would not have had this problem. Then again, it may have been something else entirely. But, live and learn as they say. Maybe others can benefit by my experience and check on their transmission modulator. Also, I've come to find out that the air pressure to the throttle servo and modulator should not exceed 60 psi, and I bought a pressure regulator to address that problem as well. Kirby |

Niles - Apparently Williams Controls makes the whole package -- the pedal, the servo and the modulator -- because when I went to Detroit Diesel-Allison, the parts came in a Williams Controls package. The service bulletin says: The WM775B transmission modulator is approved for use with the following Detroit Diesel Allison transmission models when used in conjunction with a Williams' air throttle system: AT-540, MT-640, MT-650, HT-740, HT-750CRD, HT-750DRD, CLT-750, CLBT-750 and V-730. I have the V-730. Hope this helps. Kirby |

KirbyGreat news your back in the saddle, enjoyed meeting you and seeing your coach at Busing USA. Approximtly what does it cost to have this done, including parts, to a v-730? John To insure proper operation of the transmission modulator, it is recommended that the modulator be replaced every 12 months or 50,000 miles, whichever occurs first and at each regular transmission oil change. CAUTION: Failure to install and maintain this unit as indicated may result in malfunction or transmission failure." |

John, the part was about $65 and it would not be hard to install yourself. While we were passing through Davenport Iowa, I went to the Detroit Diesel-Allison store and bought the part at their parts counter. I noticed the service department was not busy, so I just had them install it while I waited. It took about 15 minutes and we were on our way. Last night I installed the pressure regulator and set it at 60 lbs. We're camped at the Midwest Old Threshers Reunion for a while so we won't be driving for a bit, but I'm sure it will be okay. Ken, we absolutely agree with you, and it was delightful meeting you and Pat. We really enjoyed our time at your house. We hope to see you again someday, and if you're ever in Florida be sure to visit us. Kirby |
