I have a friend who races cars for a hobby, and he is interested in getting a coach like mine. He told me that his racing trailer weights about 10,000 pounds when fully loaded, not sure what the tongue weight is. Would an MC-9 with an 8v-71 pull that much trailer alright? Also, what is the legal overall length he has to stay below? |

I have seen the MC9,s pulling race traiers, they are slow on the hills. Put a 8v92turbo in they wount be. Lnegth depends on the state 60 or 65ft is around the maximuns? John |

depends on where your friend is going to be traveling...stay east of the rockies & he would be o.k. with a 8v-71 |

I talked to a guy that travels the auto swap meets with a 4104 and a 6/71. He claims to be pulling 25,000 to 27,000 in a parts trailer with no problems. He does have a two speed rear end though. I doubt that he is ever going through the mountains. Jim Callaghan 4106 Wisconsin |

Over length is the main reason I sold my bus and bought the Freightliner. Most States have a max length for vehicle and tag combo of 65ft, a few are less and even fewer are more. One, I think is 70ft. So my 40ft MCI-8 and a trailer measuring 30ft pin to tail would have put me 5ft over legal length. Also, the Series 60 was a big plus with a front radiator and the knowledge that the truck was designed to pull 80,000 lbs. Mine is 17,500 unconverted with stretched frame and a 24ft box, trailer is 10,000 max, and a conversion in a 24ft box will not be that heavy, maybe 7,000 lbs, so that makes a total of about 34,500 lbs. I have seen much longer rigs and they seem to get away with it. A buddy who was a truck driver, recently moved one such long rig and I asked him about max length. He said he was only aware of the semi-truck max trailer length, he had no trouble when he was driving it, I think it was around 80ft total. Have seen 45ft buses with 30ft tag trailers with a Saturn hanging on the back all four down, now tell me that is legal........ LOL. The only 2 speed rear ends I found available were for lowering the factory ratio to aid hill climbing and not for speeding one up, such as an overdrive would do. Peter. |

John, Don't know of a hydro-shift. I looked at a two speed rear for my Freightliner to get back the overdrive when I change to an automatic, but as I said, the extra ratio seemed to be for low end speeds. I am going to change out the punkin for a much higher speed ratio when the time comes. Peter. |

JimC, I think the o4 has similar construction to my 3751. If that is the case I'd be interested in how your friend has his hitch and how much tounge weight he's packin'. |

As far as the rear end goes, it sounded like it was a split gear set up and a 4 speed trans. the bus was a custom coach built from new. I don't know the owner other than talking to him at a swap meet when I saw his bus, it really in good shape so I had to ask him about it. (like most of you guys would) He is from Iowa I and I believe the company was Nikey parts and fastners or something like that. Other than that I can't help you. Jim Callaghan 4106 Wisconsin |

I think he will be traveling in the Great Lakes region, so it sounds like he should be OK. I told him he wouldn't be breaking any world speed records!! LOL I think his trailer is 30' including the tongue, so he will have to decide if he wants to take the chance. Thanks for the help! |
