Need advice on removing paint from a Prevost. Rather than taking a chance on sandblasting, we want to remove it by hand. Will a regular paint or furniture stripper work? I'm concerned about damaging the stainless bottom panels as it runs down. Any thoughts on this? Thanks for your help, Patti |

I have used both methods successfully. I use Jasco Gold, but it will RUIN many non-metal surfaces. For instance my Bluebird has rubber wheelwell mouldings, We duct-taped them off. when you use stripper, you are committed to finishing the job and completely removing every spec down to the bare metal. Many Auto-body restoration houses use the same method for stripping car bodies now. With the DA method that TD described, you can get away with sanding down to "Good Enough" and repaint--However Bare metal is my policy. Gary |

I would suggest picking up a book on auto refinishing, nothing elaborate, but enough to get the basic knowledge, you will have to know more than DA=Dual Action. this may be a rolling home, but it's way more complicated than painting a house. Gary |

We have an auto body shop lined up for the actual paint job, but to keep the cost down we plan on removing the paint ourselves. Patti |

Find someone to soda blast it ! Does a great job. Not an easy process, remember it is 40 ft long. The results are well worth it. Bare smooth metal, what every job should start out like. |

"We have an auto body shop lined up for the actual paint job" Yes, but $12.00 for a book at Barnes & Noble will pay for itself, if for no other reason than to ensure that your painter isn't taking you for a ride. As far as media blasting goes, you need to make sure you have a good operator. Gary |

I asked others more knowledgeable than me and they all said get it soda blasted, whatever that is. I have no idea. Supposed also to protect the metal, but somehows remove ANY finish. Also supposed to safe AROUND glass tooss. Good luck. |

Patti - Where are you & ron? If you're in an area where there are LOTS of residential swimming pools, then call several pool service companies and ask them who they know (and recommend!) that cleans pool tile. Most of the pool tile cleaning guys have the soda blasting equipment, as it's very common to use baking soda on certain tile finishes. Takes it right down to bare metal, w/o damage (except to glass itself, which should be masked). Sorta makes a big mess all around the area, tho. If you use this method, be sure to wash the coach VERY THOROUGHLY afterwards, paying close attention to the rivets (toothbrush!), to make sure you get all the soda washed off. Hi, we're located near Victoria Canada. I've talked to a couple of auto body guys and they've never heard of soda blasting. There are not alot of pools in our area so I think that may not be an option for us. We talked to the guy at our local bus company who bought our seats and he recommended fine sandpaper. Patti |

I used aircraft paint stripper on my Eagle siding. It was grueling and took 2 months. I had to us Scotch brite pads so I wouldn't mess up the fluted siding. You may be able to be more aggressive with the stainless on your Prevost, however, because you can just buff it out after removal. I don't have that option on the eagle because I didn't want to remove the anodizing. The stripper I used was almost $500 and was temperature sensitive, ie, it worked best between 72 and 76 degrees. I could do about 4 sqare feet per hour and usually worked in the cool of the morning. The stripper consisted of a paste and a liquid wash which removed the final patches of paint. The primer was a bear to get off, very tenacious. When finished though, the Eagle siding looked like new. My bus was Miss February 2004 in the Bus Conversion Magazine if you have an old copy. You can see the results there. Good Luck David Anderson |

Hi Patti I usually just read and don't say much on here but in this case I would like to offer a little input from my own experience. On the media blasting I would agree with two dogs. Haveing done alot of sand blasting during the restoration of antique crawler tractors I can tell you if you do not plan to disassemble a great deal of the drive train it can really come back to haunt you. There are many people how have done this and gotten by with it but most have sold the tractor, car, bus what have you befor the problems showed up. As far as removers are concerned it works fine in most applications how ever when used on something that has rivets the stripper can wick up under the head of the rivet then later leach back out damaging the finish of the paint around each rivet head. I do plan to media blast on of my gm3751 buses but it will have the entire drive train removed at the time of blasting. I am not saying no one has ever gotten good results with either of the above methods I am just pionting out what can go wrong. Best of luck to you Tim Hoskinson |

David, thanks for the info. Found our copy of the magazine. Your bus looks great. It looks like all of the side panels were painted. We're lucky that a fair amount of our bus was left bare. Hopefully that will save us some time. If I may ask a question, what is luan? It must be called something different in Canada as no one I asked knew what it was. Patti |

Ron & Patti: Phone Rod Caskey in Calgary @ 403 252 6538 or 888 266 2436. I haven't talked to Rod for several years but the last time I did he was making a living building soda blasters for domestic and export use and selling soda. He won't be able to do the blasting but he should know several people who can. |

On our 4106 I used cheap hardware store paint stipper, and old paint sprayer and a pressure washer. Sprayed the stipper on, let it do its work and removed it with the pressure washer. Worked great, but I painted everything afterward. BTW: I did sandblast the roof. |

As I mentioned above, You can media blast, but I would STRONGLY suggest only with a guy that knows his stuff. this includes Bagging off areas to keep out the media. Again, I think this is Academic, since your locals have never heard of sodablastiing you need to proceed with chemical stripper or a DA sander like TD said. I still recommend purchasing a twelve dollar book on auto paint fundamentals. Gary |

that is a unusual area to get anything done...either find out how much that shop would charge to prepare the surface ...or...if you evercome south..Mexico place will sand, paint with Imron ,3 color paint scheme for 2000 to 2500....If you don't really know how to prepare the surface, think it best to leave the prep. alone...prepareing the surface is 90% of a paint job...stay within' your knollege area...kinda like I would not give a woman a permanet...cause I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT IT..& nobody is going to be happy with the result... |

Thanks for all the different opinions, that's what I like about this site. After reading them all, we contacted our auto body guy who has agreed to oversee ourselves and the guy we've hired to help us to make sure the rough work is done properly. His guys will do the finishing work. He's happy to help us as his shop is swamped with work as he's going to fit our bus in as a favour. Patti |

Ron and Patti, Yes, my Eagle was 100% painted white, and I stripped everthing but the roof. Now you know why it took 2 months. I still remember how sore I would feel each morning when crawling out of bed after rubbing the beast. I rubbed that bus so much that a genie should have appeared from it. Luan is a 1/4" plywood that is about the cheapest smooth grain 4x8' sheet you can buy. It can be bent easily with the grain and bent just somewhat against the grain. It is real soft. You can dent it with you fingernail. I think it costs me about $8 per sheet locally. The stripper I used was called Poyfix PB4000 Staz-wett stripper and the wash was PB3000. I've got the guy's card I bought it from, and it is from Redman/RB Inc. The man's name was Gerry Mader 3404 Cedar Tree Ln. Erlanger, KY 41018. Phone number is 800-234-4583 FAX #606-727-2718. That 800 number may not be good anymore so you may have to do some searching. David |

Thanks David, your luan sounds like our mahogany plywood. It comes in 1/8" and 1/4" sheets and our cost is about $10.00 a sheet. Its also called "doorskin" we used it when we built our boat and it worked well. Thanks again for the info, Patti |

Doorskin = Luan Luan = Maranti Neither are Mahogany, however Luan can be finished to look like Mahogany. Luan/Maranti is REAL soft. Gary |

Luan is considered a mahogany. It's not Phillipine mahogany or any other furniture grade mahogany. Sort of like the different types of pine- red, white, loblolly, southern, and on and on..... Luan is the right stuff for certain applications, like interior surface beneath carpet or other finish treatment. I used (ok, my wife used) Aircraft stripper on the MC-8. A real pain and it wouldn't touch the zinc chromate primer. Had to sand that off with a RA (random orbital) sander. It would almost have been easier to rivet on new panels than to strip to bare metal. Jim |

Luan, AKA Meranti, AKA Philipine mahogany is not Mahogany. I have yet to see anything that jasco gold won't cut. if you unintentionally spill it on a fiberglass boat it will make you sad. Gary |

This was not an estimate, he just said that I ought to allow that much. I kind of don't think he plans on painting a bus for $2,500, anymore. Thanks. Tom Caffrey PD4106-2576 Suncatcher |
