I dropped off some supplies at the barn holding my half-converted bus today. As I left, I saw something: on the hitch tongue of the big generator trailer I'm using was a baseball-sized bee's nest, containing a considerable number of yellow jackets. I hosed it with Raid, making this the fifth nest I've removed from the area (2 actually on the bus) since early July. The tally so far: 2 yellow jacket nests, 2 wasp nests, 1 hornet's nest.

What is it with bees & vehicles?

number one thing you need to get is wasp spray...ten times as powerful & you can kill them 'in flight'...spray the nest too...instantly dead...just regular raid is a waste of time

Now here's an image for you:

Campfire, early evening...

Two Dogs and Bowlingshoegiverouter sittin' on camp chairs gleefully cackling at each other as they zap wasps, misquitoes, fireflies and any other flying critters with 10' streams of wasp spray. Then they aim at the campfire and just roar with joy when the flame erupts. THEN, Two Dogs jumps up and has the idea that BRAKE FLUID will make an even bigger flame.

Much hilarity ensues...

I got stung yesterday by red wasps. Went to open a bay door, and the little red devils had made a nest up under the handle.

He he he.. I am afraid it is even worse than you have stated. Let me tell you all a very bad hornet story and it is all true. Honest!

It was a hot and muggy morning when I rolled over in bed right onto a resting hornet. Ouch!! Nailed me right behind the right knee.

It hurt. I wanted revenge, soosss I tracked the bugger all over the inside of the Crown Super Coach, waving my trusty fly swatter.

But....I wanted it to suffer, soosss instead of swatting the thing like I should have, I pinned it against a side window with...

...my trusty razor sharp K-bar utility knife. Only I did not use good judgement and I squished him a little bit too hard against the glass.

CRACK!! The side window glass cracked from top to bottom in an instant. You should have heard my very vocal comments! AUUUGHHHH! :) :) :)

Wasps do seem to be attracted to Buses. Since moving to SW WA, I've cleaned several nests from the engine compt. A few weeks ago, I opened the flap that covers the coolant tank filler and zap, zap, zap. Three nailed my hand before I got away. I agree that long range wasp spray works best. We use 2-3 cans/year around our place.

I don't know how it would work on hornets, wasps or bees, but I have an "electric tennis racket". It has the shape of a tennis racket and where the strings would be in the head there are parallel wires. In the handle are two AA cells and a button on the handle.

It really does a number on mosquitos and other small flying problems. It is also very satisfying to watch a mosquito burst into flames and smoke as you hold the button down for a few seconds.

I have the same problem with wasps in my bus. Every time I go to work on it (when you first open the door and such) there's like 3-5 wasps inside. I'd like to know HOW they keep getting in, and why. The bus, by the way, is a school bus, still school bus yellow. Are wasps attracted to bright colors? Can they even see colors? Hmmm... I'd be interested to know.

this time of year they like to hunt for a place to be dormant for the winter, warm, dry,no airflow...bus is perfect.....wait till about 3 or 4 days BEFORE the first freeze....they know they better find someplace REAL soon..

Down here in WET Florida, I have problems with wasp/hornets making nest in the bay door handles and latches. it only takes once getting stung while opening the bay door and then it's a regular routine to tap the door first to see if any fly out before opening!

Is the long distance wasp spray harmful to painted finishes? Haven't used it yet but you never know when you have to, besides with all the wind we have had lately, I haven't seen too many around! LOL Maybe hurricanes are good for something after all! NOT!

I have sprayed it on painted surfaces (accidently)...hasn't hurt them...it IS some bad stuff....don't inhale any...& if you use it indoors ..go someplace for an hour or two...it's fun killing them "in flight"

See, TD I *knew* you would be an ace at shooting them down mid-flight. ;)

BTW, just today I heard that if you don't want the waspnests under your eaves in your stick house, paint the ceiling of the eave sky blue. Apparently they don't think they can build a nest in the sky. So I guess they can see or sense color. Or maybe the light wavelengths. They swore this was true.

Wasps also like warm places, like eaves.

Ace, I have the same problem here in FL with bay door handles. In fact, I've had wasps fly up to the bus prospecting the handle openings as soon as I have backed in after a trip & before I can shut the engine off.

I make it a regular routine to go around at night or early AM & squirt wasp killer up in the handles & other places like the engine bay as a preventative measure.

I have also found that they don't like diesel fuel & am experimenting with little pads moistened in diesel installed in the door handles .
