Just got my new "southern" '82 Eagle 10 home and found a leak in the bottom of the roadside fuel tank- rusted between the tank and the diagonal strut below it. Has anyone had the the pleasure of pulling one of these out? I can't see any way to do it short of disassembling the entire left suspension! The strut is rusted and needs to be replaced. Can we just cut it out and drop the tank? Also- in the meanwhile- Is there a way to isolate the other tank so the bus can be driven? Oh, by the way- the tanks are almost FULL!

Got lotsa other problems- no brake or reverse lights, really loose steering, etc.

Boy, oh boy, what a start to bussin'!

(That's ironic sympathy by the way! I've run into my own challenges with my project)

Others with Eagle experience will know more, but if the member is rusted, there's no reason not to remove it.

HOWEVER, I would crawl around the tank carefully and really get an idea of whether it will drop out. For instance, is the height of the tank greater than the clearance that could be obtained beneath the bus? How far will you have to jack it up? How careful will you be in supporting/blocking the chassis when you do this

Will the hole made (by removing the diagonal) be big enough to clear brackets and fittings?

It might be easier to dig a "tank sized" hole in soft ground for this special purpose.

The above are offered as thought considerations not "instructions". You're on the scene and will best be able to evaluate your available options.

There IS/used to be, a removable panel in the 3rd baggage bay on each side to remove the tanks.


Also there is 2 bolts on the bottom front,2 aft on the top..It is not easy to get the tanks out, tight fit.

Same thing happened on my '81 eagle. They sucked all the fuel out into 50 gal. drums, cut out the steel cross member and lowered it out. (the shop had a bay underneath, so no need to jack it up.)
