When I bought my bus I had the hardest time finding insurance. I tried my insurance guy and no luck, then I tried Progressive and after I filled out everything on their application the last question was verifying that it was not a transit bus or school bus conversion. Then they referred me to another company, who also would not do a transit bus, and they gave me another name, who gave me another name, and they gave me GMAC. They did my insurance but only liability. Problems that came up. I have zero tickets and a perfect driving record for over 20 years so no issues with anything like that. Gmac will give full coverage but only with a full conversion, stove, hot and cold running water, lavatory and shower. I don't have a full conversion nor do I plan to do so. Bus private ownership but my 1960TDH 4516 titled as a recreational vehicle RV Is there an option out there for full coverage including theft and collision, or what did I do wrong or say wrong that I kept getting told "no we don't do that"? There has to be an option out there. |

lose the transit term when you are on the phone. Are far as the DMV and now your insurance co is concerned, you have an RV. Usually the big hurdle is getting the RV designation from the the DMV. My first conversion done in Fla i had an guy come out and verify there was a sink, toliet and stove inside. This was in 85. If you are titled as a RV dont confuse the agents who may or may not know the difference. Its now a bus conversion. Its kinda like calling ahead to a campground and just get a spot for an RV instead of saying its a bus and having someone picturing the Partridge family bus in their mind. If you are trying to haul people instead of your family thats different, but i dont think you are a "transit" coach per se. But yes you are the owner of a Transit coach in busnut eyes and yours. |

I told them all it was titled as an RV I never said anything about transit until I was asked to check a box verifying that it was not a converted former transit bus or school bus. I couldn't lie about it, and try to scam into a policy that probably wouldn't pay up if I ever did have a claim. |

Who else lives in your jurisdiction, and who are they insured with? You own a DMV titled recreational vehicle that is riding on a General Motors coach chassis. In general terms, you own an RV. The word bus or transit does not ever come out of your mouth again outside of busnut circles. The past is passed. What is it right now? Not because you are misleading anyone, but because those words have very different meanings in other places, putting up roadblocks, of which you have discovered only the tip of the iceberg. And many of us only have liability, theft and fire, so you're already there. The cost of the rest in a short time accumulates to more than the hardware and capital outlay. happy coaching! buswarrior |

My AMGeneral transit (a very close cousin to yours) is insured with Progressive. Maybe at the time I insured it, they didn't have the transit bus check off on the application. I don't know why they have that restriction on transits-they are the strongest, toughest buses made! Good Luck, TomC |

Scott I am with State Farm since 1984 when I bought the bus. The only thing I had to do was get an appraisel. I had to have the receipts for the parts that went into it also. It lists the vin as TDH5303 C371 so they know it is a transit. Bill |

Very interesting, wonder how Transits got mixed in with school buses? There has to be an interesting story behind this! |
