Saw this bus while in Banff Canada, it was taking a group from Germany around western US & Canada. Thought it was interesting looking, even has a door on the driver's side. Imagine the conversion possibilities with this one.

Here's a pic of a similar bus from the good guys at barp: http://www.barp.ca/bus/coach/unknown/mercedes.jpg

In jest: This bus reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where Kramer graciously hosted a handful of Asian tourists to sleep at his apartment, then stacked them like cordwood in an old steamer trunk.

Seriously, though, I'd love to see inside how the 27 (??) berths work along the bus' width like that. And having that canvas porch "hallway" would make my "slide-out envy" disappear almost entirely.

You have to see this operation in action to appreciate it. Talk about organized and that is one of these tour groups; even the dirt has it's place. I have been in campgrounds next to them 3 or 4 times over the years (even ate dinner w/them in a KOA near Boston a few yrs. ago). Several of them "toured" my Grumman and my friends American Dream after dinner and were absolutely amazed with our amenities. I recall the amazement of 1 young couple at our bedroom ceiling fans and TVs w/satellite reception!

The bus was going down I-5 in California yesterday. It is a tour bus, that can hold 23 people if I remember right and does up to 20 day tours of the good ole USA

These buses are operated by Rotel Tours from Germany and they organize tours all over the world. The buses are equipped with sleeping berths for each passenger, as well as day seats and the side opens up with a platform and tent for a dining area. These buses stop in campgrounds and the passengers make use of the campground shower and washroom facilties.

Rotel has a website at http://www.rotel.de/rotel-tours/de/index.php

There is also information in the busnut.com/bbs archives that was posted some time ago.

I've seen these buses at a campground in New Jersey and also parked near an RV dealer near Hamilton, Ontario.

I just saw one like this in Homer, Alaska the first week of August out on the spit. They had the tent part out.

I think I have seen this exact bus. I mean, how many of 'em could be running around? They are kinda distinctive. Very neat.

Was parked by the Cheveron gas station in Cave Junction Oregon earlier this summer. Wish I had had the time to get a closer look.

Yeah...maximum cool. Wonder how much the tour cost? A bunch I am sure. Be really neat to get a good night's sleep and be somewhere else the next AM. Thanks.

Actually, they have a lot of them all over the world and they are indeed a unique operation. Short wheel base and a lot of clearance on most -so they can run over some pretty primitive roads such as the Taylor hiway between Dawson City and Tok. Yet on the Hiway they have no trouble maintaining traffic speed.

Several of them run around this part of Alaska every summer and I've seen them overnight at one of the camper parks here in Anchorage. The area inside the canvas canopy/curtain is a combination wash area and kitchen where they prepare their own meals on the road.

I saw two of them in Beijing when I was there five years ago.

The web site linked above is in German, but if you click on "bildgalerie" you'll get a bunch of interesting pictures to look at.

Met up with one of the passengers outside the restroom & shelter house area. Didn't get very far in conversing, my German from high school is rusty at best and he didn't speak any English. Decifered enough to find out they were fixing breakfast in the shelter house then taking off again. Believe he had said they had been to Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone and Mt Rushmore.

Several of these buses were featured on BNO's home page a couple of years ago. I saw some in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, that were being stored at an RV sales center.

They had DAF insignias on them and they bore an uncanny resemblance to older Setra buses.

If they weren't so old and rusty - and I mean Eagle rusty (sorry Two Dogs) - I may have considered one for a motorhome. And painted it a W-A-Y different colour.

Davd D said "These buses are operated by Rotel Tours from Germany"

__. Yeah, I first saw these advertised when I lived in England in the late 1970's. It's from "ROlling hoTEL" - ROTEL. In one of the pictures in this ad, two women were holding up a strip of cloth for another woman to squat to pee behind (I'm NOT making this up, you know!). I think they were trying to emphasize "very low end - very primitive".

__. As I'm in the middle of dealing with Customs on importing my bus, the idea that these things are running around in the US/Canada is very interesting to me. Wonder how they get by with it.
