Has anyone installed a vent above their stove? How did ya do it?

I plan to install a micro/convection/over the stove vent combo. 120 volt AC. Home version, bolts in and can turn the fan any way you want. Out the back, up thru the top, or recirc thru a charcoal filter. I plan on going out the back , using the wall space to chase down alittle, then install the vent that I purchased at a RV supply store. The only thing I haven't figured out is how to make the vent open automaticlly when the fan is turned on. Electricly Is not the problem just finding the hardware to do it.

Dug,

We did a down draught scheme because we have lots of lamps above the stove. However the system could be adapted to up draught just as well. We bought an air intake grille and switch as a spare part from Jenn-Air stove. We got a squril cage blower from Grainger. Built a plennum for the intake and went out through a standard RV flapper vent.

All done took about one day to fabricate the parts. Made cardboard templates first, then turned them into aluminum with pop rivits etc. Looks real nice, and really pulls the smoke out..

Best way to accomplish this is with an over the stove microwave/convection oven. Has a vent fan built in. Easiest way to do it is up through the roof with a fridge roof vent. The micro has a gravity closing flap so air doesn't come back in thru the vent. Fan air flow blows it open. Just a few inches of vent duct is all that's needed.

Installing a micro/convec oven will eliminate the need for a conventional oven which will open up space under the counter for more storage. If your cook doesn't think it will work, get some advertising from the micro manufacturers. The micro/convec oven can replace the RV oven and do everything 10 times better. (Even cook a 10-12lb turkey to a moist, tender meal in 90 minutes.)

Don't cut corners and think the micro or any other vent can recirculate thru a charcoal filter and successfully keep the interior free of smoke and odors. You must vent outside to accomplish this.

Many RV dealers stock a 12V stove hood that is great at exhausting thru a hole cut in the coach side.

Manual turn on , but the 12V lets you use it while camped , usually has 12V light too.

I used a micro/convection oven also, but I vented mine through the floor into the bay that holds the fuel tank. The less holes in the roof the better!

KISS choice , also at your friendle RV store is a simple vent thru the side with built in DC motor.

Most have a pull chain that closes an outside flap.
When released the flap springs open alowing a switch to turn on the fan.

Worked great in an old BB I had,

My choice--apartment-size (narrow) stove hood, exhausting through the side where there once was a window (I'm not keen on cutting the factory structure), with the fan motor replaced with a 12V motor, & the light replaced with a 12V (probably an 1157, your basic taillight bulb) light. Simple, cheap, & durable.
