My NH (J series) onan (circa 1979) has never given me a problem until now. During an extended run, the choke control (a heater coil which causes a coil engaging the choke to go from "on" to "off") came loose, and the positive wire which heats the coil shorted on the manifold, causing the generator to immediately stop. After putting the choke control back in place, the unit will fire up while the starter button is pressed, but it dies out as soon as you release the button. I replaced a resistor in the control box per a suggestion, but the resistor was fine. The diode in the control box is also fine per my multitester. Any suggestions? Thanks, JT 4104 |

Hi JT I have a onan power Drawer, Nh series, do not know if yours has the curcuit card like mine but here goes, looking at the gen. there is a start stop toggle switch and 2 white relays sticking out of the metal protective cover, if yours looks like this, remove the white cover on the lower relay, just pull it off (but becareful) start the gen, the relay should pull in once the oil pressure builds up, if it doesnot pull in, touch it gently with your finger, while it is cranking and starts to run, release the cranking toggle switch, the gen will continue to run.. let me know what happens.. and I will go futher in the trouble shooting of the board, if this works..?? |

When the wire shorted, it may have burned in TWO places. Check continuity from the choke to the power source. |
