I have a 4104 which has had the windshields replaced before I owned it. Problem is, the rubber channel or the windshields appear to be sized wrong. The windshields are seemingly too small, there are actually gaps in a couple of places where the 'shield doesn't even touch the rubber, much less go to the bottom of the groove. These have been filled with goop but we still get a drip or two driving into a serious rainstorm. Has anybody else had this problem? Which part is wrong? Jim-Bob |

Jim-Bob, my 4104 has a simular problem, the windshield has gaps where the rubber channel has shrank due to age and weathering. I have several gaps that are fielled with goop. I think my windshield fits good otherwise. The glass appears to be sized correctly. On your windshield I wonder if the filler seal my be the wrong size of if it may need replaced. You can get the filler strip from Mohawk at www.mohawkmfg.com. I am looking for the windshield brite trim (chrome filler strip) that dresses up the windshield. Mohawk didn't have this, but I have seen it on a Greyhound 4104 and it looks great. The brite trim fits in the filler section of the channel seal, I assume it must be "T" shapped and is as wide as the entire channel. Does your 4104 have this? Anyways, I think gaps are to be expected on our application. Unless the glass is really undersized, I suspect that the windshield opening may have not been jigged, rather it may be hand made so to speak, many aircraft structures are this way. When several sheetmetal parts are assembled without a jig, the outcome is always slightly different due to stretching and compression of the sheetmetal (aluminum) as it is fastened to other parts of the assembly. Even though the parts of the assembly are all the exact correct size, when assembled without a jig, tollerances can be exceeded. This could account for the gaps you are experiencing. The You may want to take a section of the seal to your local auto glass shop and see if he can match up the channel seal with the next larger size.. I did this for my destination sign seal and he had a catalog with pictures of every window seal cross section imaginable. He UPS'd in a whole 50' roll of seal cheaper than some glass shops were selling a 10'section. Best, Phil PD4104-3832 |

Hi Phil, I'm relieved that someone else has seen this situation on a 4104. I have heard many people say that the GM windshield glass is the same a the Prevost side window glass & I wondered if someone had put those in mine & there is just a teensy bit of difference. As to GM making the opening wrong, I would think that between '53 & '59, after 4038 buses, they would have solved this problem, if they had had it. Also hard to believe that the bus leaked for 40 years. I am more inclined to think the rubber is shrunken or wrong part or bad copy of original. I do not have the large trim but I think I would like some. By the way, have you got any of the 50' of dest. sign rubber left? I could use a piece. Jim-Bob |

For what it's worth, my '53 4104 has a windshield, and there are no gaps in the rubber, and no leaks. The windshield looks like it is meant to fit the 4104 ;-) -Chuck |

Soooo, does anyone know how to tell the difference between the GM windshield & the Prevost side windows by part numbers or markings? Jim-Bob |

Chuck, would you be kind enough to measure your windshield rubber & tell us the width? Jim-Bob |

Ok, I'll go over my '53 s window with a fine tooth comb and get you all the measurements and numbers I can find. Probably won't be able to post it until Monday. -Chuck |

Here's the scoop: The windshield rubber on my '53 4104 is black, and slightly more than 1-1/8" wide. It is new, within the last 5 years, or so. I think. On the outside, the rubber has a 3/16" black locking cord. There is no trim covering the rubber on the outside. The windshields are two different manufacturers. One is marked: E-Z-EYE Safety Float ASI XV DOT 15 M30 [LOF] (in a square box, on a diagonal left to right) The other is marked: Solex Duplate Laminated Safety Float ASI M29 25 108 [PPE] (in a box, first P big, next P nested under first, and E nested under middle P) -Chuck |
