I'd like to get some legitimate/experienced (not rumors) input regarding V-drive transmissions. We all know Allisons are great but how about Voith 863 and ZF HD590 in combination with certain engines. Speak... |

I think what you will find on this board are well meaning, mostly well informed, and in most cases, experienced "opinions", not rumors. If you want "ligitimate/experienced" input then talk to someone that deals with these models on a professional level (dealer). Otherwise, you get what you pay for. (except when Luke or Fred Hobe answers!) |

Wha-a-a-t? Are we being a bit defensive? O.K., I'll re-phrase, "opinions please?". After all, isn't this an "opinion/comment forum"? And while you're at it, expound on the virtues of Cummins vs Detroit 4-cycles. Tha-a-a-nx!!! Rdub |

On 4-cycles 60 series super, cummins N-14 in bus or under 50,000GVW ok seen N-14's with less than 250,000 miles need lots of work, head gaskets, oil and water leaks. I would love to do a 60-series in my mc-8. Someone here had a voith? go bad and installed an allison. I think it depends on how well or bad a maintance program the owner/operator has, with transmission life. ralph7 |

Thanks for the input so far! O.K., here's the deal. I was going to pick up a Cummins L-10 w/Voith transmission today...but found a DD series 50 with an Allison V731 (like I was originally wanting). They are both around 275hp/890ftlbs. The DD is electronic, the Cummins is mechanical...advantages and disadvantages. Anyone care to share their experience/knowledge/opinion on this situation? |

The L-10 was not Cummins best, this is what I was told by many places I asked when I was looking for my truck. Especially the electronic version as it was a transitional engine apparently. But since the L-10 you are looking at is a mechanical you don't have that cross to bear. I know nothing about the Voith apart from what little has been said on the boards and that was not always nice. The DD being electronic, should give you better mileage and power, but you have to get all the electronics that it needs hooked up and have access to someone who can trouble shoot any problems you will undoubtably come across. Shop time on electronics can be costly. Also, the Series 50 has had some comments that they vibrate, this is due to having a counter shaft to balance the motor, not the best design, but until you actually drive one and see how bad it vibrates, I would reserve judgement. Can't be that bad, there are quite a few running around in trucks and buses. The Allison is track proven. Maybe you should buy both and use the mechanical L-10 with the Allison and have the best options with the least trouble connecting them up. Good luck sorting out the million replies and opinions you will surely get...... LOL. Peter. |

Hope that series 50 is attached to a VR731 rather than the V731, otherwise it will have 3+1 speeds reverse and only one speed forward. |

Hi rdub. Go series 50/V731. L-10 a real shaker, and throw away motor, acccording to some. Nobody knows Voith, even if it is a better tranny. Series 50 can go to 315 HP, VR731 pretty much bulletproof, and widely available rebuild or replace. Get all the harnesses and computers. Yeah, 12 year transit scrap sales!!! happy coaching! buswarrior |

In case anyone is following this adventure...just got back from picking up a Series 50 (DDEC) with a VR731"R"!!! a retarder! So now I don't have to install the Jake I was planning to. It's a pretty exciting looking motor/trans, hmmmm, now if I can just make it all work. Thanx for the input, Rdub |

When you're riding your retarder down the hills be sure to watch the temp guage, I've seen it at 300F... Needless to say, that's a good way to fry your retarder/transmission/both. |
