In another thread, Fast Fred brought up the possibility that another busnut's coach might be considered commercial, based on it's use. Since this comes up every now and then, let me throw this fuel on the fire (These are HYPOTHETICAL situations, but worth discussing):

1) Joe Auto Enthusiast has a 20' cargo trailer stuffed with NOS OEM antique car parts. He makes the rounds of the old car swap meets towing his trailer with a crew-cab pickup sporting a self-contained cab-over slide-in camper with standard pickup license plates from his home state. During the swap meet season, he lives in his truck/camper combo full-time. Is his tow vehicle considered commercial per the DOT?

2) Joe decides he wants some more room and comfort, so he buys a 35' bus conversion that's registered as an RV, hooks it up to his trailer, and off he goes for the new season. Is his tow vehicle now considered commercial per the DOT?

What's the difference??

FWIW & HTH. . .

:-)

Follow the money.

From what pot of money do the vehicles get purchased, maintained and operated?

Expensed before taxes, or spent with after tax money?

That, dear Virginia, will be the test.

happy coaching!

Interesting, because here in Ontario there is no difference between the two. Both are considered RV's, regardless of the registration of the pickup truck (which is legally an RV as long as the truck camper is on board).

I was told by the DOT a few years ago that if it has a commercial sign on the vehicle, then its commercial, example My van is lettered and insured as a business, my Bus has NO signs and it is considered my camping vehicle, If I put one sign even in the window, Its Commercial. Just my understanding..

If I put a vote for ______ bumper sticker on my bus, then do I have to report my fuel bill as a campaign donation? Sounds like that would make it a commercial vehicle. Omg Dale Earnhardt has the largest fleet of commercial vehicles on the road.

Driving for hire and getting to job are different. Showing brand support or being a fan of a product including your own business is not a commercial vehicle. My paper boy uses his car to deliver papers... It's crazy talk but anything can be interpreted for or against. When you start selling tickets for rides or getting paid to haul freight and hazardous materials then you are in CDL territory. I delivered girl scout cookies in my vehicle... Some girl scouts also asked about using our bus for a local community cookie sale to get attention... Arrest those little criminals in green, while your at it get them for child labor violation laws, not having a business license, and for selling unhealthy food targeted to other children.

Land of the free...has a lot of fine print after it.

I'm just kidding of course but at some point it becomes crazy talk however if it's a clear cut line then that line gets drawn way too far one way. Cars with no brand logo's, dealers not putting their names on vehicles, no bumper stickers etc. Paul Revere would probably get a speeding ticket today and a summons for a noise ordinance violation. I choose to laugh at the world instead of worry about what if's. Live life and have fun... For everything else there's master card, lawyers, and presidential pardons.
