This may be a silly question but I have never towed a car 4 down before. Do you lock the steering wheel or leave it unlocked?

Next question then is do you have to leave the key in aux position ? How do you keep the battery from draining?

http://www.towingworld.com/articles/towing101.htm If you check around in the archives or google towing with an RV you will find plenty to look thru. I like the Escapees forums they have alot to ponder. One issue with towing anything is that its more to worry about. You want to make sure all is perfect and then you can concentrate on driving not worryn about your toad. There is alot in the Archives. get the supplemntal brakes as well. Good luck

Frequently the first notch on the steering will just unlock the wheel.

Use a single key , not a heavy bunch of keys that could change the key position.

Lock the door with the normal keys while towing.

Most states require a brake setup on a towd if its over 2000lbs.

We have found the magnetic lights are better than modifying each tow vehicle , no 12v -24v problems.

Cory,
Here is our procedure to towing our 95 Grand Cherokee. Drive up to car and connect towbar, put car in reverse to latch towbar, shift transmission & transfer lever to Neutral. Place transmission in reverse and rev engine slightly to confirm transfer case is in Neutral. Turn off ignition (Transmission still in reverse). When engine stops turning, put transmission in Park. DO NOT TOUCH KEY. This ensures steering wheel is not locked by shutting off ignition switch when car is in gear. I also do not let anyone help me hitch the toad to the coach or carry on a conversation while hitching. Just our way, YMMV.

Several years ago, we let someone help. I did not check and they had locked the steering column. We ruined a tire by the time we had driven 14 miles from the Turner Center to our house. Jack

Not sure about the 2000 model, but on our 1995, we had room to drill a couple holes and install extra light sockets in the housings that are strictly for towing and not connected in any way to the cars lighting system. I was told that tying into the existing lights required some diodes. We used the magnetic lights for a while, but found that even being very careful, we still ended up with scratches where we placed the lights.

Are you and Candy going to make Palmetto Cove in April this year? Jack

Keep in mind too that what is the correct procedure for Jack's 95 GC may not be the correct procedure for say, a 94 or 96, etc. The only way to know for 100% is to look in the owners manual for that model and year of car. Don't listen to a dealer, shop mechanic, salesman, your sister's boyfriend's nephew or anybody else. They will not be the ones paying for the repairs if something happens! We have an 87 Wagoneer, not the Grand Wagoneer but the one that is about the same as a Cherokee. They used 2 different systems of 4 wheel drive in them, and depending on which one you have, the procedure is a little different. Got a friend who bought a new jeep a few years ago and didn't read the book because he thought the hookup would be the same as his previous jeep. Jeeps are Jeeps, right? Cost him $4000 in repairs.

We tow an 2008 chevy impala 4 down using a remco
tranny pump. The 08 chevy does not have a factory steering lock. Also lift the trim around the shift
lever and move aside the shift lock. Now you can put lever in N with key out. 06 Bill

First, you have to decide what vehicle you want to tow. Then read the owner's manual to see how to do it and if you can. Then, get a hitch on the bus which doesn't wreck the engine cradle or other parts of the rear frame, then get a tow bar for the towed vehicle, figure out the lights (and brakes?) and get on the road. You might want to tell your insurance agent about your plans. Good luck

Parents used to tow a Chevette and needed to put a bungee cord on steering wheel to stop oscillation of steering wheel in certain low speed maneuvers.
