while i was fueling up my service truck, i was watching traffic go by... i saw 2 trucks hauling marcopolo buses!!.. these were new coaches... you could see the plastic covering the seats... but there was no running gear!!!.. just big empty holes where the front and rear axle would be.. and nothing in the engine compartment either....single rear axle....they were on drop-deck trailers, and about 5 feet hanging off the rear... looked like they might have been 40's but couldn't tell for sure... i live in victoria texas... i saw the coaches on us.hy. 77.... probably headed to mexico..or farther south maybe... but surely nice looking paint schemes...and nice looking aerodynamic windshields....it suprised me that ther was no running gear... have any of the bus mfgr's ever made glider kits??

MCI used to build shells in Canada and trailer them to the US for the driveline install.
If the busses you saw were going out of the US the customer probably wants to install their locally made driveline and save a bunch of money

I knew a guy in the oilfield equipment business which sold a lot of equipment in Argentina. (among other countries) The US company had to build a plant in Argentina for 'local manufacture' of about 1/3 of the components for the actual finished product because of country regulations limiting foreign products sold/imported there.

I believe Toyata, etc., and even MCI have to do the same in the US. I read something similar to what Stan mentioned. That's the reason MCI is in Pembina in the US - it's just across the border, and some of the coaches for US consumption are finished here because of US law.
