Spent about an hour in the lighting department of Ikea last night. They have some rather small and (to me) rather spiffy fixtures, which are largely 12V. Most are MR based bulbs, which burn hot, but give excellent light. Obviously, they come with a converter, mostly wall warts, from 120V to 12V but I'm going to experiment with a couple cheap ones to see if I can run them direct to 12V.

The only potential down side I can see to these is the ability of the bulbs to withstand vibration in a bus environment. Considering the cost of 12V "RV" fixtures and their lack of any design sense, this might become a real bargain. Has anybody else used this type fixture?

We've had had 12V halogen lamps in the bathroom on our bus for 3 years with no problems. I eliminated the 120V/12V transformer.

Micheal, check out the conversation 12vdc or 12vdc dated 9-04 on this board. I had asked a similar question and I got a lot of input. I'm not at that point in my conversion, but I do plan to use some of this lights.
Good luck,
Luis

Hello Michael

Just be careful of all the heat that these powerful bulbs give off...don't want a fire in your ceiling or cabinets!

And heat is power consumption. Those style lights are power hogs to be sure, but do make lots of light!

happy coaching!
