A reporter from CBC Radio3 which is a CBC web site for stories, spent the weekend at a BC Bus Nuts ( FMCA Chapter Rally) In Fort Langley BC. Maria wanted to know why we had bus conversions instead of a factory built motorhome. She took pictures and interviewed us about our coaches. Here is the web site www.cbcr3.com. Check the Table of Contents, then Home On The Road.

All I could get at that site was an ad for "Pedro the Lion in Concert." Not even a button for the Table of Contents. Do you have the actual address for the article?

George
Just click on the ad, then you will see a table of contents on left side with a link to the article.

WOW!!! What a beautiful and extremely well done Flash web presentation and photography. I usually don't think Flash works very well for the web, but it's *real* refreshing to see some creativity.

Kudos to Canadians everywhere!

that is the coolest site I ever saw, using the photos as a backround and the text as a transparent overlay is so cool, I'm mad I didn't think of it

Flash is a great tool for (us?) web developers... But as we see in this case, overuse of it causes problems with accessibility that are not easily overcome, due to the number of browser/OS/Computer variations.

For myself, this one gets a 10 for looks, and a 1 for actual quality... It's just too hard for even someone like myself to access the information easily.

Yup Derek - it's usually the navagation that lessens its worthiness. Usually it's the developers getting *too* creative!
...a former multimedia developer

Not to change the subject too much, but while looking around the CBC site, I saw schwag from the RED GREEN show. Do you guys ever see that??? Seems just like the thing for out of control Busnuts.

Here's a quote:
Pens and calculators are for sissies. Handymen like Red Green carry duct tape in their breast pocket - a must-have for life's smaller emergencies.

It's great! CBC in Canada and PBS in US.

What problems are you guys having with the site?

It works very well for me, I am on a 1.5M connection though, so that may be the difference.

I think this is a radical departure in design, someon's gotta push the edge, Im going to pass the link to one of my webdevs and see what she thinks about it.

I'd like to do a personal home page in the same format.

Gary, Flash works technically very well, and I have no problems with that. It's just that many developers have some non-intuitive ways of designing the interface which is confusing for a lot of the users. And on the web that is the number one no-no.

On this site, for example, the 'page flip' buttons in the top right corner would *seem* to indicate next page. But that's not what they do. They go to the next story instead. It could be argued that that is non-intuitive. That's no fault of Flash, and perhaps for regular viewers of this site who know how to use it, it's no big deal. But for first-time viewers it's somewhat cornfusering to know where you are. But this one is miles less wierd than some. I think it's great and I plan to see the archives and view it often.

There are also 'web purists' who will tell you that you can't link to an individual page, (like when using frames) and other arguments which promotes their 'anti-Flash' position.

Thanks again to the other Gary for the pointer!

I have to say that as a fairly experienced web surfer I had difficultly with the site too...

At first, I actually couldn't find the contents tab

I even went to the extent of googling "cbc 3" and approaching it that way.

After a bit of frustration, I went on to something else...

The next attempt yielded the contents page but then the article was only two pages long (it seemed)... when I tried to turn the page it went to another article! (I agree with Chuck in my opinion, counter intuitive)

On the third try, because I knew there had to be more, I searched carefully and discovered that the page numbers were almost entirely obscured by my task bar!

Having said all that...

What a great article and what excellent photography!

The website itself was very beautiful to look at, quality work for certain, I imagine once you know your way around it is a snap to navigate.

I had to go back to Gary W's original post to know I had to look for TOC, then after that, I was OK.

I have already secured webspace for a page following a similar format, now I need some Macromedia software.

I've been looking for some inspiration for my personal webpage, this is it for sure.

I've forwarded this to a couple of my associates and their reaction mirrored mine.

Super cool e-zine. I too struggled with some of the navigation, but quickly got the hang of it. I'm still too "old school" of a Web surfer to care much for sites with music... it’s too assaulting when I just want to read stuff. That said, once I cued up the instrumental Sabola track (away from the singing stuff), it actually seemed to help the mood of the story a bit.

If I could get a similar look from HTML, I'd be all over it. Too many people won't or can't do Flash because of the issues Derek talks about. Lots of corporations spend oodles of $ on Flash intros that I merely click through, looking for information rather than a "show". But this e-zine is sure pushing the envelope as to what a Web experience can be about, so hats off to them!

Oh, the photography on this article… soooo nice. I'd love to get a run-down of the equip. she used. Film? High end digital? Flashes? Some of those exposures, esp. with the even lighting in the bus and looking out through the windows and not blowing out any highlights is SO hard to pull off. I guess that the sun so seldom shines in that part of Canada has to help! Amazing images.

Sorry so chatty,
FBB

Everyone I've showed it to thinks it'e the coolest site they ever saw. Including several old soldiers that preface their comments with "Usually I hate flash but..."

I need some Macromedia software.

Ya know them Canadians do pretty good stuff!
