My neighbor Charlie has a 4106/8V71/VS2-8 that seems to pull OK when cold, but after it warms up, it quits pulling (or shifting). Fresh fluid and filter change gave no joy. No crashing/clashing sounds when you put into foreward or reverse, and the shifting solenoids appear to be operating well. Kommentar? Any help from you pro's? Since this is not driven but a few hundred miles a year, (a couple of nearby rallys) perhaps a change to a different type or grade of trans. fluid? Maybe there is an additive to help slipping bands (if that's what is wrong.) He's thinking of re-building it, but I think he should install a V730/31 instead. Which one is easiest, the 30 or the 31? Oh yes, and as always, money is an issue. Slush boxes are not my cup of tea, so any constructive advice will be greatly appreciated. Cheers...JJ |

JJ I think the first thing would be to make sure the engine is putting out full power as the VS2 has to be reved up good to get it to go into over drive. Make sure the solenoids are working. We need a little more info as to what is happening. Does it move at all or does it not shift into O/D. It would be a lot cheaper to rebuild the VS2 as they are very simple inside then switch to a V730. I prefer the V730 as I did the exact thing many years ago. The V730 has a lot more torque multiplying on the take off but the final drive ratio is different so the top speed will be less. If you want to rebuild the VS2 I can photo copy the manual for it for the cost of paper and shipping. Bill |

Jayjay, there are no bands in the VS2. Lots of clutches though. First I would check if the fluid level is correct. (warm up, put in gear, take out of gear, shut off engine, check immediately.) There is a lot of drainback from the huge converter & if you check cold, it will seem full but the bus will not move. If checked hot with engine off it will be accurate. If the bus won't move at all, I think it is trans fluid level. There is a mechanical gearbox to shift F-N-R. That's the lever towards the output (fwd) end of the box. The electric/air shifter on the pax side shifts FNR. I believe Fwd is to the rear. If the lever is moving back & forth, that's step 2. If it starts but won't shift into "Second" or "Third", then the problem may be in the shift governor that looks like a mushroom bolted onto the top of the trans case with two fluid lines attached to it. If that gets sticky from grit or?? the trans will go F-N-R but no or mistimed upshifts. The transmission starts out in Direct through the convertor. At about 25MPH, the converter is disconnected & the trans stays in Direct up to about 50 where the Overdrive splitter is engaged which then overdrives Direct. The splitter is in the flywheel housing. Let us know what you find. P.S. The VS2 gives good top speed & almost stick shift fuel mileage. Ask Don Schwanke about this. It can be rebuilt (except splitter clutches) in frame. The V730 series does not have these features. |

Thanks Guys,it gets hot and won't go into gear. When cold you can drive off with no problem, and it works OK, but if you shut it down, then try to leave, (hot) then it won't go. Shifts well as long as you are still going, but once stopped it won't go again 'til it cools. Charlie is having a pacemaker installed and will be 'hors de combat for a while. Don't know when I'll have a shot at troubleshooting it. I'll try to let you know ASAP. ...JJ |
