I looked and looked and didn't find this in the parts book, but maybe I was not looking on the right page? My brain is fried anyway but I need to find out about this. I looks like some sort of regulator. It connects to the side of the compressor. Is it oil lines, air lines? or both coming in and out? What ever it is, it is leaking air with a drip of oil out of that hole in the bottom. Maybe there is a seal that can be replaced? or the whole thing replaced?? First I have to know what it is. My book does not show that there on any page I have seen. 61 TDH 4516

I don't see a governor on the air compressor. Is that an old style? Where do the other hoses go?

Is there a better replacement or should I look for a rebuild kit, or rebuilt unit?

the governor that is used now is the D2; mounts right on air compressor. I'd switch to it now. Relatively inexpensive and available everywhere

The D2 can also be mounted remotely, if your so inclined and your existing plumbing is in good shape.

You can just remove it and replace it with a new type, common and cheap governor. I did that with my 4104.

Remote governors were common on those older GMs.

Thank you everyone. Sometime I am amazed by the cheap prices on some parts. I like those kinds of surprises!

Is it east to know what hose goes where on it? Is it marked like "to compressor" etc?

Yes they are labeled.

They come with pipe-plugs to plug off the ports you are not using (for various mounting options/etc.)

I grabbed a new one for my coach and it was like ~$12

Scott - I think that you're getting suggestions to take the governor off the bulkhead and replace it with one that's mounted on the compressor. I'm very interested in this because I have a "remote mount" governor too and the only air dryer that will accommodate that is a special AD-9 that is set up for the remote mount. It's like $600 (ouch).

If you do move your governor, please take pictures and record which air lines you have to reposition, etc.

Thanks, BH NC USA

I thought they were telling me I could remote mount that just the one I have now? I just want to unscrew the lines and put them into the new one and mount it the same way in the same place. Is it that easy?

Scott, just replace it where is located now and save a real pain in relocating stuff, it is not difficult it I can do it!!

As I recall it involved a lot of hose rerouting to locate it on the compressor. Since the compressor gets really hot that just didn't make much sense to me.

It has been five or six years since I did it but I don't remember having any problem making the correct corrections.

The new gov is marked and, as I remember, it came down to logic that after a couple of them were connected the last one was obvious!

OK, Scott. Sounds like you have your bus figured out. I can do mine pretty easily without changing much but as I said, the air dryer alone is ~$600.

It might be that I'm better off doing that but if I can move the governor (and I'm not sure that I can do that with the Leyland compressor) that might let me use the more common version (and the less expensive) air dryer. More to research for me.

Thanks for the info, even though it doesn't apply to my bus, it's helpful.

you can see that they can be used both ways. Go to the Bendix site and look up air compressors. They will show how they are mounted to compressor, eliminating all those hoses, or mount it remotely if you desire. That ref. shows the port locations, as does Bendix.

Ok I got it installed and no leaks. I have not road tested it yet but my pressure builds to 120 then drops slowly a few pounds to about 110 then back to 120. My old one used to pop off a loud air discharge when it got to 120. Is this just quieter? Or maybe at higher rpm it will pop off louder? Or should I adjust it some how?

Scott,

That sounds about right. I think the original was slightly lower, but not much.

When my '54 4104 governor failed it would go to 150 psi before it popped, that got me attention. I was on one of my early trips and had no idea what was wrong.

These old buses are not designed for 150 psi and I was amazed nothing blew out!!
