The seal around my engine mounted generator has a leak. Is that easy to replace on the 6v71? It looks like it just has a bunch of bolts around it then it would just pull off. I've not looked at the book yet but is that something that is as easy as it looks at a glance? Does it slide off and how far does it have to slide I might have to remove some other stuff to get clearance? It just looks like a big gasket around it or is there something more to it.

Separate question it's working fine but are there advantages to changing the system to an alternator instead. And is that an easy change or does changing that mean you have to change other things on the electrical system down the line?

Is the leak around the generator or the figure 8 metal piece behind it? Either one is easy to replace but the generator is VERY HEAVY. You need a hoist to lift it unless you are a body builder. Disconnect the batteries as well. The feed through stud is too close to not disconnect the batteries. The orginal generator will last forever so I wouldn't replace it. About the only thing that can go wrong is a diode goes bad and they can be replaced without removing the generator from the engine.

No problem with the gear breaking like on a DD871 ?
Which BTW destroys the cam gears & costs a small fortune to repair.

If he is talking about a generator instead of the modern Alternator with diodes, The generator has brushes and a voltage regulator of significant size, which can need periodic maintenance and adjustment. Jack has a point about the gear drive system on the alternator. The cup drive that they run off has to be set properly with a dial indicator, as the alternator is overdriven by the teeth on the inside of a cup gear running against the drive gear of the alternator, which has 1/4 as many teeth and is much smaller. If the cup is off slightly, the mesh clearance between the drive gear on the alternator and the cup gear on the engine will vary from too tight or just right to too loose to the point that the teeth can strip, jam, or break. Unfortunately this damage results in pieces of broken metal parts being spit down into innards of the gear train on the back of engine. This failure can be very expensive to repair. It has been a long time since we replaced the generator on the 4104, but I don't remember this being driven the same. We purchased an adapter with a double pulley, and mounted a Leece Neville 160 amp alternator that was obviously belt driven. We made mounting brackets for it. We removed the very large voltage regulator. Never had one problem with it over a couple hundred thousand miles. Only ever had to adjust voltage output once in first year of use. Take a picture of your generator or alternator. Our generator had a voltage regulator in the small pass. compartment in front of rear wheel. It was about 1 foot square and 5 inches deep. The regulator for alternators is much smaller, almost car size.

It sounds risky for me to do this so I'll just add it to the list for when I take it out to Luke. I thought it would just unbolt remove it , new gasket and put it back on. I don't want to risk messing up something bad to save a few bucks.
