I live in Oregon but am Canadian and would like to buy Satellite TV service with local Canadian Channels. That way if Hockey ever comes back I might be able to get some coverage down here. Have any of you Canucks used your system while travelling in the US of A and I am interested in your comments I would intend to use the system at home and in the Bus |

There is a wildcat system that lets you use Canadian channels from the US, I can get it for $600 one-time fee, no monthly fees, but you do have a hiccup when they change the codes. It is totally illegal, and totally unenforced. Gary |

Might I add unenforceble, unless they come in and look at your receiver. $600? I'm not even going to tell you what they're going for up here. |

Who would be the governing body that would come look for your receiver? |

IIRC the only people that could would be the sattelite co; and even then they would have to get your permission to come inside... However there is no way to detect the use, and there's no way they could come into your residence without the government involved... Which wouldn't happen. Hence why I said the only way you could be "caught" is if they came into your place of residence and looked at your receiver. |

$600 and they could c hange the codes tommorrow. I am not a "goody two shoes" but that just sounds like a poor investment.. could work a day or a year? I would be happy to drive to BC, buy a system, pay my monthly fee, and have the guarantee that I'll have service tommorrow. Besides, what if a Mountie comes looking around my bus in the middle of the night..he's going to find that bogus receiver right now. |

Not to mention that a Canadian Satellite company has no standing in the US. It is complety uninforceable, however they change the codes from time to time and you have to get your satellite guy to give you the new codes. gary |

Not the dish, the system I've heard of uses an addon card in the actual receiver that plugs into your television. Once they change the codes you hook it up to your computer with a cable and download the newest code, and you're good to go for another while. |

they change the codes every month or two, never results in more than a day of downtime. I grew up in oregon, I never saw the RCMP there even once. Where can you legally buy a Canadian Network receiver in Oregon? (I think the answer is: You can't) I believe the wildcat is your only option. also, the $600 deal comes with all the premium channels (Including Hockey that you asked for) Do the math, that's a pretty cheap deal. Do what you want, I'm just trying to help. Gary |

To use a Canadian system in the US, you need a legal Canadian address for billing. It is the reverse of the grey market in Canada where people use the US system. They have cracked down on dealers who were just using a PO box in a US state for billing but they can't do much with people who have a legal residence address. Under Canada/US communication agreements, they are not legal. I have a residence in both countries and I used the US system in Canada until the Canadian satellites were powerfull enough to reach the US south. I then used the Canadian receiver in the US. I see many Canadian dishes sitting beside RV's in the US and if I see the owner I tell him to paint the dish. The authorities don't have to come into your house if you put up a dish with a Canadian name on it. As far as being able to detect a dish in your house, I am sure that is possible. All electronic devices have oscillators in them that radiate. The police use Radar Detector Detectors that can tell if you have a Radar Detector in your car. |

There is a system that is totally legal and is manufactured here in the usa that allows the reception of all KU an C band channels via a 18inch dish. The technology is called FREE TO AIR. This system receives BELL EXPRESS VU, DiSH Network and nearly every broadcast channel in the world with the exception of Direct TV. The cost if anyone wishes information can be obtained by emailing greatcomputers@msn.com I have one and it has worked excellantly. Works really really well with motosat. |

I mentioned the system because it's the only way that I know of that you can get local CA programming. OK , who is the victim when you pickup signals that can't be purchased from your location? Gary (Watching Dish Network and Paying for it) |

It's in USD. If you can make the trip up north, can't you get Canadian programming up there and get it installed on your bus at the same time? Do you have a Canadian mailing address? Gary |

If you have a Canadian Credit Card or Billing Address, you can pickup a complete 3100 Bell ExpressVu system at Future Shop (Canada) for $99.00. You must subscribe to get that price. I have minimum programming and it costs $34.00 CAN per month. The DSS dish on your motorhome or the Winegard Dish can be used, so no need to buy the dish or carry it with you in the motohome. Bell has just switched Satellites and is now 'spot beaming' the signal. As a result the further south you go the fewer channels can be received. I'm not sure which will or will not be receivable. Last year, prior to spot beaming, all channels were receivable as far south as the Arizona Mexican border |

We've used Expressvu as far south as Guasave (limited coverage there) but with full coverage in southern Arizona. So you should have a good footprint in Oregon. My bride pays the bill but I think it costs us something like $50 Canuck-bux per month for programming. In theory I think you need a Canuck address to establish the service but, if you have it billed to your credit card, I don't know why you would need the address more than once. E-mail me if you need a Canuck box number to get it started. BOB '81/95 Prevost LeMirage |

Bell ExpressVU in Canada, a service very similar to DirectTV and DishNetwork (subscription service) uses the Nimiq1 (91 degrees W) and Nimiq2 (82 degrees W) Satellites. As mentioned above the FTA or Free-to-Air Receivers will receive channels from any satellite. However, the FTA units will only receive free or unscrambled channels, which are slim on some satellites, but many on others. These units, use any 18" or larger dish. They are well worth the $160.00 because you can go anywhere and find a satellite with something on it. These do not receive pay services without an illegal programming change. These will support up to 4 dishes at one time. Bob |
