Has anyone put their gen set in engine compartment successfully?
I am thinking about isolating it with a fire wall to keep it cool.
Have a MCI 5C. Would like to put it where the air cond. compressor was.
What do you think?
Thanks
C Ray

I have put my genset in that same spot in my 5a. It works good and is very quiet, I also use the engine coolant to cool and the bus muffler also.

Jeff
Did you do anything to keep engine heat from generator? Do you run generator while driving?
Where did you tie onto the bus muffler at?
What size generator?
Thanks for your response. Also thanks to Fred for his.

C.Ray,
I tied into the lower radiator hose from the right bus radiator for the generator coolant. The generator has a water pump on it and pushes the water through the bus motor just fine, also when both motor are running, the coolant from both engines are flowing the same way. I have ran the genset for over an hour at load in 90-100 degree weather without over heating either motor. The best part of this installation for me is we do a lot of winter camping here in Washington,so all I need to do to preheat the big motor is start my genset! As far as the exhaust goes I welded another pice of genset pipe in the bus exhaust at the right angle so the bus exhaust doesn't feed back into the genset. Also my genset is propane ,I was worried that the Detroit would carbon up my genset,But two and half years latter both run strong. If I could do it all over again I would do the same thing. When the genset is running you can hardly hear it , That is with no extra insulation. Good Luck and let me know how it turns out Jeff nmanoske@msn.com

Jeff, how did you "weld another piece of genset pipe in the bus exhaust at the right angle so the bus exhaust doesn't feed back into the genset"? I like the sound of this setup and would like to learn the details.

Tom,
On a 8v71 the exhaust on the passenger side comes off the manifold straight back then it makes a bend upward 90 degrees then it makes another bend 90 degrees to the other side of the motor, at that second 90 I welded a one and a quarter inch pipe into the bus exhaust then I used a piece of stainless flex pipe like you find on a large compressor so the two can flex on there own.The flex pipe has to be good quality, if not it wont last long . I wish I had a digital camera then I could send some pics. Good luck. Jeff
