My research indicates that Crown used high tensile steel in their buses, which shouldn't be oxy or stick welded due to cracking.

Before I spend $1000.00 on a mig welder, I'd like to hear anyone else's experience with welding a Crown.

Is there an easy way to tell if framework is mild steel or high tensile steel?

Anyone got a mig welder that can weld up to 1/4 inch steel? If so, what model, price, pros/cons?

I don't know about Crowns, but you can get a decent little Campbell Hausfeld gasless wire feed MIG welder that will do 3/16 for a couple hundred bucks. Might serve your needs.

Having purchased one of those CH MIG units, I think I would have rather spent a few more $$$ for a 220v unit. I use gas, not flux-core, it's not bad ... but recycle time and heat aren't great. If you preheat material, it helps.

I admit, the duty cycle is a bit to be desired. But I found there were always 15 other things that I could do while it cooled. My welds still look like the dickens, but so far I have welded up a complete under-frame truss system for my water tanks, storage bays, a roof rack, and a myriad of other minor jobs on my transit. It is not a professional quaility welder that everyone would be happy with, but worth consideraton for some people. There were times I wished I had a big powerful beast.

Very true ... I got my moneys worth out mine so far. I actually got mine at a Lowes for $299.00 (WG3002). I see a similar model on the CH website for $229.00. http://www.chpower.com then click "Hot Buys".
Might be worth a look?

I forget my exact model number. It was a Flux Core 80. But I learned not all Flux Core 80s are the same. Some have an adjustable feed speed and can take a large wire spool, and others only hold a small spool and are preset speed. Keep an eye on eBay too, they are frequently for sale. I got mine heavily discounted and unused on eBay.
