Are there any Crown owners/enthusiasts out there with a good EF 10-speed for sale? I'd like to see my 68 go faster than 58 mph!

Jim -

Do you really want to shift thru 7 gears just to get to 35 mph???

With that bit of humor out of the way, let me suggest that you consider changing the rear axle ratio. A "taller" gearset will give you more top speed and better fuel mileage, although hill-climbing will suffer slightly.

Crowns use "off-the-shelf" truck components, so finding parts for the rear axle is a snap, compared to us GMC guys.

Put an HT754CR Allison 5-speed auto in it, and you'll really have a sweetheart to drive!!

IMHO, only,

I have a Rockwell Q-148 rear end with 4:63 gears. To put new gears into it would require a new carrier and gears (pretty much the whole pumpkin). I'd like to find one here fairly local at a reasonable price. I agree, the gears would be much easier to replace than the transmission. Besides, this EF 5-speed is extremely durable!

If the bottom line to your question is you want to be able to cruise at a higher speed at a lower RPM, changing the transmission will not be the answer question. Few, if any, heavy duty manual transmissions have overdrive gears.

The easiest way to change your rear end gearing is to go to taller tires. If you currently have 10 X 20 or 11 X 20 tires, going to 11 X 24.5 or 12 X 24.5 tires will increase your top speed by about 5 MPH.

If you end up having to change out your rear gears, the easiest way to do so would be to purchase a complete rear assembly. If you really want to get radical, change out the rear assembely with an air ride unit.

Since Crown used standard off the shelf Class 7 or 8 truck parts, finding used parts and pieces is relatively easy. Almost every truck wrecking yard will what you will need.

What you do will be determined more by your creativity and pocketbook than anything else.

Good luck.

Out of curiosity, how many rpms are you pulling at 58 mph? My Bluebird does 57 with 6.14 gears in the rear. The engine is turning 3,000 rpm at that speed.

Having said that: How about an EF 5 speed with overdrive? If you go to a 10 speed, you still want overdrive.

My husband says you need an RTO 910, notta RT. You need the overdrive to go faster. Otherwise you can change the differential, anything 4.11 or lower.

FYI; Class 8 truck parts.

Taller tires do nothing.

personally i wouldnt go more than 65 in a Crown. Just to be safe. They're schoolbuses, not race cars.
