How necessary is the Fast Idle control on the 8V71? I have converted to an air throttle and the fast idle does not work right. Can I just disconnect it without bad results? The book I have says it was for maintaining the air conditioning while at the bus stops. That air is history. Thanks for a great board. I have picked up many tips for my first conversion. |

Ron The fast idle is mainly used for the a/c as you stated but can be removed with no effects on the engine. The main reason I added fast idle to my coach, even though there is no bus a/c was to build up the air pressure without having to stay in the drivers seat with my foot on the accelerator. It also is used when I idle the engine for any length of time as Detroits slober oil when let idle slow for any length of time. Bill |

I kinda wish I'd left my fast Idle on my bus, just for airing up, etc. |

DD usually have low oil pressure on idle , the fast idle is a good way to raise it while waiting for the air to come up. Kinder on the neighbors is a small air compressor, 12V or 120V that will keep the air up. Then there is no need for even a min of ideling. FAST FRED |

If you are going to add cruise control, then King offers the high idle as a feature. Works great with air throttle also. Gene R |

Thanks for all the input. I knew you guys would come through for me. I hope to be full timing in this thing next year and I have a lot to learn. I have not been around a DD before, though I've been a user of many other diesel engines.I just thought the "slobbering" was my DD's way of marking her territory, kind of like my dog. FF has the idea. I use a 3/4 hp oil-less compressor into the aux. tank for airing up, an added benefit, since I originally installed it to maintain air for the leveling system while parked. Empty tank will air-up to 90# in approx. 4 mins. |

Folks with an inverter , big enough to run the AC air compressor have been able to "limp home" with the bus air system inop. Doesnt take much to keep the brakes and suspension up. FAST FRED |
