Quick way to tell, look on the bevel (not the pulley's belt groove) of one of the front pulleys (usually the right looking at the engine, IIRC) and you'll see an 8V92 cast into the pulley. DD did a 5V92 on those engines in the same place. The 8V71 typically has about a 9-10" vibration dampener and an 8V92's is much beefier and like 14" in diameter. There's lots more clues but these are quick, walk-up "no brainers" If this ain't enough, I've got an 8V92TA sitting on a stand out of a bus (the spare core) and I'll take a picture, if you wish. Also maybe take a quick look at the valve covers. The later '92s MAY be alumiuumiumum and the earlier '71s steel...BUT NOT ALWAYS! Use a magnet. Also usually (but not always) there will be a metal tag/plack do-hickie thing on the left valve cover which will (maybe) state what the thing is. Good luck. |

Then there's the turbo and sftercooler..... All '92s have them VERY few 71s do. Jim Stacy |

Usually the aluminum valve covers were installed to provide extra height for the Jake brakes. I've seen plenty of 8V92's with low profile steel valve covers. Onward and Upward Marc Bourget |

My 8-92 If this works it will be my 8-92. It's not the best shot but it is what I have tonight.

TwoDogs, Sorry, Files are too big. Perhaps give Ian permission to send me your e-mail address and I'll fwd directly. The first shot shows the 8V92 on the front pulley and the second is a close up of the Harmonic Dampener, The 8B71 is about 66% as big. Marc |

2D We can hardly hear the engine from the front of the coach. Try as I may I can't even hear the Jake working - it is working - I just can't hear it. No chance of hearing the turbo. I've got a boost gauge so I know when it is online. |

One of the fellows at Southern Oregon Diesel told me that the 8V71 does not use a vibration dampener when I wondered aloud if ours might be bad. Is it possible that the ones that you guys are talking about are just pulleys? I looked in our service manual and it didn't clear this matter up. What say you? Tom Caffrey PD4106-2576 Suncatcher |

Tom, When they upgraded to a 8V92 in my father's Prevost they ran out of room and, incredibly, installed the 8V71's dampener on the 8V92. It decided to fail on the 91 Fwy, between Anaheim and Corona in rush hour traffic. He made the evening news! Pops wouldn't listen to reason and spend the extra $$ for the proper 8V92 dampener. He installed another 8V71 unit Wonder if the dampener or the crankshaft will fail first? Go Figure! Both engines, as installed in the Prevost, have harmonic balancers or dampeners but I've seen some 8V71 installations (stationary water pump engine) that have simple pulleys.
