I have ordered radius rod bushings for my bus. In the GM Coach Maintenance Manual Section 14 It says "Important":When any radius rod has been disconnected, correct clearance between the axle bumpers and the axels must be obtained before tightening anchor pin cap screws or anchor plate bolts. If connections are tightened without obtaining this clearance, a torsional preload will be imposed on the rubber bushings when the body assumes its normal ride height. Instructions under "Tighten Cap Screws and Bolt Nuts" must be followed explicitly.

Now, with that said, if I go to the "Tighten Cap Screws and Bolt Nuts" instructions, the first sentence says, "Refer to step 10 in "Installation Procedure" under "Front Axle and Air Suspension Installation" or Rear Axle blah blah blah for instructions on obtaining ride height clearance between axle bumpers and axles.

The way these references are written, it would lead me to beleive that if I were changing the axle, that I should be concerned about ride height clearance between axle bumpers and axles. Here is my question: If I am not replacing the axle, is axle clearance going to be affected if I am just changing the radius rod bushings one at a time?

Please help me to understand why if I am changing one radiuse rod end at a time, my ride height will be effected.

My next qestions are possibly related to the first: A couple of times last year I came out to the driveway to find my 4104 listing to one side. What causes this? Is it normal? Is it cause for concern?

Thanks Guys,

Phil WHEN i changed my rr bushings the bus was aired up and supported (in several places + several exta)I pulled one rr at a time, making sure i replaced the wire.with no problem.
On your bus listing you probably have a air connection leak.maybe a bag or beam.nothing that you cant get parts for.

The control valve will also hang and leave the bus with " that leaning feeling". I have had to replace the valves on my bus. I have also replaced the air bags. I got mine from Lewis Bus in Augusta Ga. If the bus is low on the r/h (passengers) side, the the emergency brake hub mounted on the input of the rear end can rub a hole in the air bag and then you get a permanent lean. The radius rod bushings can wear in the rear end also, and let the rear end shift enough to blow the right hand air bag. To test the bushings, check the clearance bewteen the air bag and emergency brake drum. Then pull the bus up on some wooden blocks that are at least 8 in tall. 10 inches would be better. Then check the clearance bewteen the bag and drum again. If you have less than 1/2 clearance, I would replace the bushing. You are taking a hugh risk of blowing the air bags if you don't change those bushings. Don't ask how I know ~(:0)...

Suffice it to say once was not enough for me to learn my lesson, I had to do it twice.
