Alright I've got the head on my cherry picker. I know I'll get new filters for the injectors but what else would you do with it. The Detroit place said if all the injectors were good I wouldn't leave with it for less than $500. That's a little steaper than I was hoping for. I would like to get the injectors timmed but don't have the tools. I know it can be timed installed (and maybe that's the only way it can don't know) but what is a must to do now and what would just be a good idea and what SHOULD it cost me?

You set the valves and run the rack after the head is on. You need a feeler gauge for the valves and the DD injector gauge is under $5.00.

kinda have to ask, but why did you pull the head????.... or did you just decide that this was something on the daily to-do list???/... if you are fixing oil leaks, great... but now you have to clean the parts... very clean!!!! like with varsol first..then hot, soapy water, then varsol again to keep from rusting..... then inspect for wear... do you know what a worn part looks like??? not just a guess... take it somewhere that is professional and PAY THE PRICE....as far as replacing injectors, shop around... you can find reliabilt injectors for about $30 each...if you don't know what you're doing, HIRE A PROFESSIONAL 2-STROKE MECHANIC... i can't stress this enough...the fuel system requires cleanliness.... lots of people think that its easy to set injectors and valves, but there's a lot of stuff to miss... do you know how to set the air gap??? i'm not trying to be a horse's patoot, but what you're doing requires someone that is familiar with 2 strokes...if you mess up setting the injector timing or syncronization, you may destroy your engine....if you want to do your own work, buy the service manual, then study a working engine, identify all the parts, before you take it apart... then proceed.. my $0.02.worth....

I think the answer to the question in the subject line is:

"Have it examined"

Just to clearify on Derek's post the muffler had to come off due to a hole the size of a baseball right under the inlet. It wouldn't come out from the bottom or either side my only choice was to pull the engine or the head. I also had some oil leaks from under the head so I figured that I could kill two birds with one stone.

Now I don't know that anything is wrong with the injectors or valves. The engine runs and sounds fine. Not that I have anything to compare it to, but it doesn't sound like anything is off. I just figured that I'd get the thing checked out while I had it off. I now know that I can't get just the filters inside the injectors, I'd have to buy the whole injector. So most likely I'm going to put the thing back on as is and not mess with it. I can then later take it and have it tuned up if need be.

I've got all Da books on the thing and although I don't claim to be a mechanic I will say I'm a pretty good parts changer. I feel pretty comfortable following the directions in Da book to do what I need to do.

I do appreciate your input Jim, I have helped build a couple tractor engines. I under stand the nessisity of a clean environment when working with the fuel system as well as the inside of the engine.
