Well, now that David has FINALLY decided exactly what he wants to do to the Eagle 05 (1972), we need to know something. We want to put a manual shift 9 or 10 speed Roadranger in the bus (don't start on the Automatics please...). I don't know much about them (I do the research) so I am a bit confused when I look up 10 speed Roadrangers and find a lot of confusing numbers and letters. What one(s) will drop into the Eagle and bolt up to the 8v71n motor that we have. We would like to put in an RTOO 910 but I can't seem to locate one (or have I and just don't recognize it). Any good places in the South East for a tranny? We need to get the tranny in before we can put the floor back down. And I need to figure out what it's going to cost to buy one. Guess we get a transmission for Christmas or our wedding anniversery :P! Lorna |

Let's get your Eagle soaring! Yeah, lots and lots of different Roadrangers out there and MOST will NOT work that well with your Eagle. A 9-speed WILL work, but understand they were designed for starting heavy trucks up steep grades from standing still without smoking... ...the clutch. They are essentially an 8-speed with a granny gear. What this means, to get the needed deep reduction in the lower gears,... ...is that the gears are kinda wide and far apart. OK for the newer generation of high torque diesels, but nots soossss good... ...for the older (but still great!) 8V71, which is a kinda peaky, untorquey type of mill. A 9-speed will work in your Eagle,... ...but there are better choices out there. He he he...I love a good plan. You do tooosss. What your REALLY need is the older, famous... ...(infamous?) close ratio, non synkronized, heavy duty (heavy duty enough!) easy shifting, RTO-910 10 speed Roadranger. I have a RTO-910 in my '74 Crown Super Coach 10-wheeler ex-schoolie. Superb tranny. I start in 2nd gear. Top speed 80+ mph. Can shift 5 or 6 times crossing a wide street. Or...you can skip gears...blah, blah. A gear for every need and some extra left. Again, a wide ratio 9-speed will work, but your would usually never use the first 2 or 3 gears. Too low. Designed for heavy loads. Wasted in an Eagle. Also the top gears will be too wide to REALLY work with your 8V71. A RTO-910 has 28 and one half percent, 26%,... ...and 22 and one half % drops. Very close indeed. Plus, the RTO-910 is a very common, older tranny. Expect to pay no more... ...than $1000 for an excellent condition example with some sort of warranty. The proper gearbox will really make your Eagle soar. Broom, broom,...broom!!! Anyway, I am babbling again as per usuall. The RTOO was a very rare factory gear set. Hard to find, unless custom rebuilt. Is possible your 8V71 may not be able to pull that double overdrive 10th gear. However, it may be able to pull that 22 and one half % single... ...overdrive of the RTO-910. Anyway, I would hate for your to make a bo bo fitting in the wrong Roadranger. You need a RTO-910. Thanks. |

Better late than never I say, But I did install a rto 10 in my eagle05 and loved it, but the wife could not drive it so I'm now doing a repower and740 allison. I have the ten speed with a almost new clutch and flywheel for sale onek buys it all! Also there is some snall frame cutting needed to do the install and can send a drawing that will help. |
