Any advise on where or how to deal with an 8v71 Turbo that I am told needs a major rebuild or replacement? I am told a valve is burned and the engine is worn in general...although it seems to still run ok, other than low power on steep grades. Should I go back with an 8v71T or go to a 8v92T? This is in a Prevost bus. Where would you buy the engine and or have the rebuild done? How much should I plan to spend? The local DD dealer is asking for +/- $24k! Thanks - Dave |

Dave - First thing I'd do is to call Luke at US Coach, 1-888-262-2434 between 9-5 EDT. Ask him what his thoughts are on your situation. Also, the minor detail of not mentioning whereabouts you are makes it a little more difficult for us to give you good recommendations. HTH, RJ PD4106-2784 Fresno CA |

I think somebody is trying to get a new wing built on his house..I'd get in the bus & drive a few hundred miles & get a second opinion, from another two cycle mechanic.. |

Commercial rebuilds as used by most bus co are far cheaper than DD rebuilds. DD $12-14,000 Commercial $4,000 or so. FAST FRED |

an overhaul kit...pistons /liners/rings/bearings/gasket set is about 1500 I think...would pay extra for a GOOD two stroke mechanic...don't know where you are,but start asking around,he will probably charge 3000.00.....hopefully ,my old age, things haven't gone up that much.. |

That e auction place had some good deals on engines in the past few months. Caveat emptor, of course. In come cases, you can also buy entire transit busses coming offline that have recently rebuilt engines for less than a recently rebuilt engine. Then give the rest of the parts to Luke ;-) Make sure rotation is the same as yours for any engine "deal" you consider. Your 8v71T seems unusual, but I'd think it to have more HP/torque than the fairly common 6v92 you'll find all over. Now, an 8v92... that's a powerhouse (with the fuel bill to match it). Lots of cooling to upgrade, too, I'd think. FWIW, FBB |
