In reading one of the recent threads regarding golf cart batteries, venting of the compartment was mentioned. I wanted to share this info without skewing that thread, so heres one of its on.

I had read online the Trace installation manual for my SW4024. It covers the battery enclosure, as well as lots other good battery/charging info.

I have never in my life seen two feet over the tops of the batteries clearance.

Does this mean that I have to take the hood off my new F-150? And relocate the 2, 8-D's in my coach?

You have a new F150 with two 8D's?

Geez, I slipped into an alternate dimension again.

Never mind, spontaneously forgetting how to read makes me think I've slipped again.

They're coming to take me away! haha!

Gary,

In a static environment, the provision for 2' above the batteries may be directed at maintaining sufficient volumne to reduce concentrations of Hydrogen below explosive levels.

In an underhood situation, no charging (usually) unless the vehicle is moving and the radiator fan would stir things up enough. Many Inverter/Batt Banks (never in the same enclosure) are in bays, etc. which could present a problem

This is just a preliminary opinion after musing about the 2' clearance issue, FWIW

I've repaired and built a lot of RV battery slides, and on almost all of them, we were lucky if the cables didn't rub on the ceiling of the battery bay.

As you say, the moving coach always provided lots of ventilation.

I think the one critical thing to consider, is the construction of the battery compartment should never allow venting into the interior of the coach, or any other space that might contain an ignition source for that matter.

Why not just install Hydrocaps and not have ANY explosive or corrosive gasses escape the battery. Six bucks per cap and seem to last forever. FWIW

Except for having to remove them during a equalizing charge cycle.

I realize that my rig is a little different than most but I'm planning to put several luvared vents (4 maybe more) between the chasis bat bay and my house bat bay. The chasis bay is open at the bottom and I figure I can get enough circulation to stop things from exploding. It may also have a couple in the floor and have it's own door to keep it sealed from the rest of the bay, where my hydro-hot will be.
