Just purchased an 1981 Grumman/Flxible. Has a Detroit Diesel and auto tranny. I have not yet identified the tranny but from the looks of things it maybe an Allison. How can I ID the tranny?

Problem: sometimes the engine will not turn over because the "shifter" attached to the tranny gets stuck in a gear other than Neutral. I once had to manually push the "shifter" into neutral for the engine to turn over and start. But now, it won't turn over. How can I test this "shifter"? And any advice is welcome. Thanks.

If the engine is across the rear of the bus which I think Grumman is, most likely it is a V730. There is a plate attached to the tranny near the bottom with the info on it. If you look at the tranny there is a large round part at the right side of the bus with only hoses attached to it. If this is so then it is a V730. If it is a V730 then at the side of the tranny near the bottom you will see 2 wires coming out. This is the neutral switch. Disconnect it and put the tranny in neutral and you should have continuity through the switch. You could also attach the 2 wires together temporarily and see if it will turn over. If it doesn't turn over with the 2 wires together then you have an electrical problem with the starting circut. Hope this helps you. Bill

I would be a V730 or a V731 if the transit authority replaced the original at some point.

If it has the shifter on it, it has to be a VS2, they use a gearbox on the output end to reverse, neutral, and forward the power.

IIRC a 1981 Grumman would have come stock with a V730. I don't think they ever used the VS2 on the Grumman or Flx Metro.

Yeah I think you are right. The word "gear" got to me too fast I think.

I have a 4905 with a V730 an a bennett shifter. Mine does a wierd thing that has come up with two different tranny's. If I tack off with my indicator in the drive position my tranny will shift from first to second without a problem, but will not go into third. If take off in second position and when I get to 48-50 mph I can manually shift to third and I have not problem. If I let it shift down by it self to second it will not come out, but if I down shift with control switch I can up shift manually. This has been this way through two trannies. Any Ideas?
