Does anyone have any experience with an Trace autotransformer? I was told that this unit could be used to power a 220V a/c unit from a 120V supply.

Autotransformers have been around forever. It will work. "Auto" does not mean automatic but that the primary and secondary are taps on the same winding. If you have 130 Volts in you will get 260 Volts out. 115 Volts in, 230 Volts out.

If it is within the wattage specs for you AC it should run it fine. Sounds like a good idea.

It will also work in both directions. It will reduce 240 Volts to 120 volts to allow American appliances to run on European and African 220 volt systems.

If you don't use it, give it to a missionary group that sends people to 220 volt countries. They will use it.
