I am planning the installation of a Detroit Diesel Fuel Pro fuel filter. A mounting location in my MCI 8 with 8V71 is proving difficult to find without compromises – above the fuel tank, accessible for adding fuel for priming, and trying to stay away from the exhaust manifold. I have a couple of questions if anyone could answer. Why do the installation instructions require it to be installed above the fuel tank? Would a manual shut off valve before the filter, eliminate the requirement? Has anyone utilized the unit successfully to prime their engine after they ran out of fuel? At this point, I would install it as high as possible to the right side of the engine compartment between the taillight assembly and the exhaust pipe – recognizing the compromise of it being closer to the exhaust than I would like. Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance, Ed Roelle Flint, MI |

Ed, I think the "higher than the fuel tank" is to prevent the fuel from siphoning out when you open the filter to change the cartridge. Haven't ran out of fuel YET I installed an aluminum plate inside the enginge compartment on the right side. This plate is attached to the vertical wall in front of where the OEM holding tank was. (This "wall" is about 9" tall) The filter was installed on this plate allowing only enough access to the top to remove it. I also installed an electric fuel pumd on this plate to allow refilling/priming. I will be glad to email you a photo if you want. Jack PS: I received your reservation for Bussin 2005, Lookin' forward to seein' ya'll again. |

One comment. Refilling the Fuel Pro filter won't prime the system if you get air between the filter and the engine fuel pump. |
