how much would the average person weigh ?? if you say....150...then the bus was made to haul 7000 pounds of people ...and say the average passenger had a 40 pound suitcase..that would be 1880 pounds...that's 8800 pounds...since I removed 2000 pounds of seats & added 2000 pounds of ref.,shower,divans,t.v. sinks, food,etc....really...she has alot easier life... just thinking |

Just did an internet search for the average American weight. The average male is 190# and the average female is 150#. So indeed our buses have life much easier. |

I do not believe that statistic. Especially the one about women. The average weight of the women I know is far less than 150 pounds. I am not sure I want to live in a place where that would be true. |

I am not making any guarantee to accuracy it is just the first one that I saw. Either way our buses probably have life a little better after we get them. |

For flying the standard weight of a passenger is 170 lbs. Must be close because it is used for critical weight and balance calculations. |

at 170 =9600 pounds...that's almost 10,000 pounds she is NOT hauling........... wonder if the bus drivers can tell the difference between an empty bus & a full one.. |

According to the stickers on a couple of Glaval cutaways at work, the wieght is figured for 150lbs per seated passenger, 200lbs for a wheelchair passenger, 10lbs luggage if the bus has inside racks, & 25lbs if it has a baggage compartment. |

A *safe* calculation, would be 200lb average... 250, if you wanted to... 170 is pretty *normalish*, and according to the health people, many people are *over normal*. Now, 58*200 = 11,600lbs. Each person carrying one (1) bag, weighing 40lb (Easily, for any driver doing current inbound tours will tell you..) is another 2380lb of luggage... 13920 lbs as an upper limit on a 45' bus... Not bad load capacity... |

Lets not forget that the hound also hauls freight in the bays...and I have to believe that the seats and overhead bins together are at least 50 pounds per seat, so closer to 2500lbs than 2000. Easier life indeed! Brian |

Oh yes we think a driver can tell the difference in a full bus. Last year I went to New York to get a car we had bought on ebay. I got to ride a newer MCI to the train station and it was full of folks. I sat behind the driver, well you know why. I was playing 10 questions with the driver, he wanted to talk. When he went to pass a car, I could feel the weight of bus make a sway out into the passing lane. A different feeling than I was used to. My question to the driver was, ya think we might have a low tire? His answer to me was, "Oh no we are just running full of passengers". Gotta believe that meant it must handle different empty. I learned a ton form setting behind that driver on the 50 mile bus ride. What a great guy, a retired bus driver. But when the bus line got busy they would call and have him drive on occasion with local runs. He also was coaching at a school. Sounded like he missed being behind the wheel of what we all enjoy, Busin. I talked buses and he wanted to talk my ebay. Man we got along. Sorry to rattle on. So I think we took 3500 lbs out of our coach total. With all the Dutchman trailer interior and what we added back in. I am about even again. I fell like I am running empty. BUT my eye is on that 12K liquid diesel generator. That will add some weight. You all have good math. Most of us are not running fully loaded anymore and our coach has an easier life. Speaking of loaded, Beer time Later: Larry |

Yeah, like, I've sat on the beach in Florida where most of those "average" American women who think they weigh 150 lbs go by in their thong bikinis. Think Two Dogs in a Speedo. Uck-a. Ian www.busnut.com |

Just for the record, you can definitely tell the difference between a full bus and an empty one. I drove for Trailways for several years. You can really tell it when stopping and doing things like changing lanes. There was also one time we picked up a load of soldiers to take them to the airport. All big guys and the bays were completely full of footlockers with gear. We had to start off on a slight incline. It took about 20 seconds for the engine to get enough rpm for the turbo to kick in. Boy, that was a heavy load. The bottom of the step well was only a few inches from the gound. I've never seen one that low since. |

When we moved away from Houston, the interior of my bus was fully stripped. We packed the bays and the entire bus as tight as we could, to save on some moving company cost. We have a lot of stuff. I weighed the bus before and after. She was carrying 10,000 pounds before Wife, son, self, 4 dogs and cat got scrunched into the front 4 feet of the cabin. There was a big difference in the way it felt. Surprisingly, acceleration wasn't that much different, but breaking required several more feet than I was used to. When we emptied it out it felt like driving a go cart in comparison. On the swim wear topic, there really are some ladies who just don't belong in a butt-floss bikini and some men that have no business in a speedo. Yet they persist. It is why I spend less time on the beach than I would like to. :P |

Hello all. As noted earlier, you know about the load when stopping or changing lanes. The get up and go is a little slower. Difference is enough that most of us may have developed just a hint of bad habit that might bite us if we were to load our buses to "wartime loading" and go for a boot. happy coaching! buswarrior |
