What do you have to do to make jet fuel work as a diesel fuel. I can get jet fuel pretty cheap.

I worked at a power plant where we had 4 Fast Start Peaking Units powered by two jet engines each.

We had a 1000,000 gal supply of jet fuel on site.

One of our management people bought a diesel car and was fueling it from these tanks. It ran well for quite a few years but he ended up replacing the engine.

I don't know if the difference is additives or what but I am told that the break down is gasoline is a better cleaner fuel, diesel is next and jet fuel is after that. then comes the sludge that factories burn.

My thought

For many years we ran jet A in the Detroit 8V/71 air start carts and generator sets with no problems.
The push out tractors had 6V/53 Detroits every thing was using Jet A.

__. Jet fuel is a mixture of a kerosine-like refinery product, gasoline, and additives. It's a lot lighter (in consistency) than diesel fuel but the biggest difference is that it has much less lubrication effect than diesel fuel. I've heard of people running jet fuel in diesels (early Rabbit diesels seem to love it) with no problems but others have had problems -- specifically later VW diesel cars don't like it. Their fuel injector pumps are lubricated by fuel and jet fuel will wear them out quickly (and I hope to never had to buy a fuel pump on any engine I own). Others have seen increased bore wear and the thought is that the light-weight kerosine stuff is washing the film of oil off the bores and rings.
__. Some people who have critical engines have been able to get away with adding an additional lubricant to the fuel. Some people with simple, low tech engine get by with Marvel Mystery Oil, others use 2-Stroke (outboard) oil.
__. But the bottom line seems to be that you become your own vehicle test engineer. If you get away with it, you save lots of money -- if you have problems, you've smoked some expensive parts of your engine - or the whole engine.

The "Get Home " rule for boats that still had cooking kerosene , but ran out of diesel,

Was to add one quart of lube oil to 5 gal of kero.

Might work , might not , on Jet A

Detroit had/has a special injector that lets your run Jet Fuel or kerosene, plus another (?) letting your burn gasoline/alcohol. Also I bet in a pinch you could start your 2-stroke Detroit on diesel, then switch to kerosene or Jet A. Good luck.

I talked a while ago to a guy who has been running a 1996 F-250 diesel (7.3 PowerStroke) on K-1 kerosene since he ought it in November of 1996. Almost 200,000 miles & no trouble. He adds Power Service fuel treatment (Stanadyne or any of the other brands would also work) to every tank. Bonus--no smoke.

I don't think that has enough oil in it...but...200,000 miles...I might be wrong...

Jet A is highly refined Kerosene, and as an added benefit is super filtered. You could probably use it for brain surgery it's so clean. You still can't legally use it on the highway, due to tax issues. That's part of the reason it's over $3.50 gal. the last I bought here in S.W. FL. Cessa Caravan w/P&W PT6-Ah4 ...JJ

I worked at a Millionaire fixed base operator, we used jet fuel in every diesel we had, never heard or knew of any problems in any application. The Isuzu diesel in the Bobcat ran for days at a time day and night when snow was falling or needed plowing.

Or spray starting fluid on it and light it - no wait, no, that isn't right either. I get old and forget the drills.
